^I think their initial appeal was the scene in San Francisco in the late 60s. What with the hippies, free drugs, herpies, and free five-hour concerts, I guess you just had to be there to understand where the Grateful Dead are coming from. That and their love of all things Americana.

WTF?

The Grateful Dead suck.
There are a few good tracks on Dead Set, but I agree. The Dead are noodle bull**** generally, and that's saying a lot from a die hard free jazz fan.

Their stew of Americana music - gospel, folk, blues, R&R, country, etc. - is very cool for sure. And their coming on the scene when they did (1967 - Height Asbury) was pretty much winning the lottery for the band.

But in total hindsight?

They suck compared to their peers from that era.

I love Jack Straw, though.

Even though I was in high school in the 90s, my friends and I listened to all those Sounds of San Francisco bands during the summer.

The Grateful Dead were a perfect example of a hotch potch folk/psychedelic and other genres band. A typical example of the late 60s west coast American psychedelic hippie culture. Their studio work is at times quite distinct to their more interesting live work. Personally I like them and recognize their place in musical culture, but I can also understand why any normal and sane person would shun them and think what the hell is this crap.

Only listened to a bit of them, but I get the impression they're a band best enjoyed with a good toke. Unless I was high enough to be able to just zone out, I don't think I could take more than a few minutes of that kind of music that doesn't seem to go anywhere.

It's mostly live albums though which is hardly surprising considering their live shows lasted about 10 days.
I think they only have something like 10 or 12 studio albums.

I attempted to listen to ther studio albums a while back because I'd never even heard a single song by them before, I think I heard the first 2 albums and just sort of forgot about it.

I guess that sounds about right.
