Pop Punk is good, well done music
Lamb of God is probably the most legitimate metal band of the last decade
Superjoint Ritual > Pantera (both bands had Phil Anselmo as vocalist)
Nu Metal is a splinter genre of Funk music
Jazz > Classical music

Originality is important for any album, but I think 40 years on we are allowed to look past a particular album's historical importance and really focus on whether or not that album is a collection of "good" music.

Sgt. Peppers is a cool album and I do like it a lot, but a lot of its appeal comes from the fact that it was so indicative of an era; music was either written before Sgt. Peppers, or afterwards. The contrast is quite stark.

If Beethoven suddenly got ahold of a bunch of Chinese instruments and incorporated them into his arsenal, then we would probably think today that the music was cool from an originality standpoint. but originality≠good music, and I think the beatles are a prime example of this.

Revolver is a great album, followed closely by Abbey rd and rubber soul. The white album and Magical mystery tour are cool but just a little too diverse I think. The white album is so uncohesive, its like 3 artist's albums merged into one huge compilation I have only made it through the whole thing on long driving trips. Normally an hour into I just get bored.

Yes, I think the white album is sub par

The White album was pretty typical of double albums throughout the 60`s and a large part of the 70`s. In that their charm, was their lack of being cohesive, extremely diverse, experimental and to some even bitty. Despite all that, it still stands as one of the greates doubles of the era along with "Electric Ladyland" and the later "Physical Graffitti".

Mogwai< Maserati
mogwai is cool and all, but there are better bands out there. i like to think of mogwai as "post rock for the post rock newbies"

(i'm not saying i don't like mogwai, it's just that maserati is better.)

Yeah exactly you've summed it up nicely. I think double albums are underrated and many are among my favorite works, I don't mind that they have some filler because the best ones still have a greater quantity of good music than single albums.

Mellon Collie is my favorite double album.

I think anybody seriously into rock especially in the 60`s and 70`s should have an appreciation of double albums and live albums in general, it was what these groups were all about, its on these releases that the great groups really excelled.

In regards to Yes, one of their best albums without a doubt is the live "Yessongs" and a double to boot as well.

I love "Mellon Collie" too, without doubt one of the best doubles ever recorded. Hell any album that has Jimmy Chamberlain drumming over a double album must be something special.

The thing about double albums is they were big before the CD was invented. It's unfair to say a band only makes a double album out of overindulgence because a lot of the best artists simply come up with too much great music to fit into a single LP, maybe not enough for 4 sides but enough for 3. But because of the vinyl years it would be weird to have an album of just 3 sides so back then filler was needed to do what filler was logically meant to do.

Overall double albums having at least a quarter's worth of filler isn't an issue with me. 3 good sides is still better than 2.
