Thats why I have always appreciated some of the less famous bands over the years. And importantly, some of the finest players are unknown 'session' guys.
I definitely agree on that as well. Marc Ribot is a very underrated session guitarist that has a lot of solo work on his own but is known for his work under others. He's played with Tom Waits, Arto Lindsay, The Lounge Lizards, Elvis Costello, John Zorn, The Black Keys, Frank London, and countless other acts. He usually kicks ass and makes the song for me, although some bands have a lot more going for them than others in his discography (f.e. Lounge Lizards consisting of solely good musicians and Elvis Costello being horrific beyond Ribot's repair). Even though I don't like some of his session work, it goes to show his range. His style is definitely unique, as it's very rock and punk based but relies on free jazz syntax and modal movement that I find really appealing. He's definitely underrated as he ranks as one of my favourite guitarists not because of technicality but because of his singular expression. Check his shit out.

Spoiler for Collaborations/Sessions:

As you can see he's got a lot of attitude for a jazz guitarist. His album Saints is a great solo guitar album that I rate pretty high. This song off of it is great:

I think that the Velvet Underground's work with Doug Yule to be very overrated as I can't listen to any of that crap. The fact that it's the VU doing the mediocre music is what really irks me, if another band released the record I wouldn't bash it but it's the same band that released the VU and Nico so the bar is set pretty high.

Default Big Boi

I think Big Boi is underrated. His two solo albums were amazing, three if you count Speakerboxxx. I think Andre 3000 is the greatest rapper of all time. And if Big Boi was a solo artist he would easily be higher ranked. I would put him 2nd greatest, and there are many times on Outkast tracks where he proves he is the greatest! It is just because we want to hear Outkast as a duo, that we don't consider their merits individually in my opinion!
