You know, that was what influenced the 12 hour road trip, but I was blown away when Melvins started playing. They completely stole the show. In all fairness, how exciting can a post-metal performance become? Don't get me wrong, ISIS was excellent and everything I expected live, but I enjoyed the Melvins much more.

The Ocean - Heliocentric (2010)

This is a truly awesome album and perfect example of how cool post-metal can be. The album follows the theme of the Heliocentric world view, the idea that the Earth revolves around the sun. It also poses the challenges that religion was facing in the evolving world of science. There's actually a comparison album coming out in October called Anthropocentric that questions the belief that the Earth is the center of the universe.

It's something I've noticed with a few post-metal bands, a heavy influence by the world of science. Rosetta's The Galilean Satellites explores concepts behind the moon Europa and other Galilean moons for Jupiter. Another band, Giant Squid, also put out an album last year called the The Ichthyologist which had a lot to do with marine biology. There's also the Finnish post-metal band Callisto, another one of the Galilean moons.

Anteater you would totally eat up this album.

VERY NICE PETE! I had no idea! Link me, please, please, please! I love The Ichthyologist, too! Til this day, my favorite album by The Ocean is The Fogdiver. Hopefully that'll be changed with this album?

^Have you listened to Precambrian? If not, I would seriously recommend that before Heliocentric. Heliocentric is alright, but it's more of really heavy alternative rock with only tiny traces of the sludgy goodness they did before. That may sound interesting to you, but in my opinion they don't really pull it off.

Tom Burbank - Famous First Words (2006)

I've had a digital copy of this album for several years, maybe even as far back as 2007. However, it always sat in my backlog, but I'd hear a song once in a while when shuffling. I finally decided to give it a spin a few months ago because one of these songs impressed me. And indeed, it's a great album. I'm only now getting around to a second listen and really, this is quite amazing stuff. Especially considering its release date of 2006. You'll find here some electronic music that is basically a mixture of IDM and glitch-hop. This guy is from LA and the sound is definitely what you're hearing from that city these days, with Flying Lotus, Lone, edIT, and a host of others. Granted Flying Lotus and edIT both released their debuts the same year, the sound has really exploded in the last few years and I think Tom Burbank deserves as much credit as those two. Note that the IDM/Glitch-hop sound really took off in 2001 with acts like Prefuse 73, Dabrye and Machine Drum, but the sound I'm talking about is the latest evolution of that, the more "wonky" stuff that seems to be distincly LA recently. Maybe I just wasn't quite ready for this when I first listened to the samples in 07 or whatever. It feels fresh as fuck right now, as if it had just come out in the past year. Fits right in with today's scene.

Edited to add a tune. This is quite similar to edIT's debut at the beginning, with less excessive glitching, and a bit more laid back. I'd post one that differenciates him more, but it's the only one on YT.

It's well documented that I am in the minority of people who don't like Stone Roses much and on top of that I find their second album much more preferable but my Dad visited yesterday and as he frequents car boot sales a lot (similar to America's yard sales) he bought this for me as well as this:

He had no idea if I had them (I didn't) but it was appreciated and I still think that half of Stone Roses debut is really really good but the jingle jangle of those guitars does nothing for me a lot of the time.

They still have taken a place in my collection though

He did also pick up a Darkness CD for me which is quite frankly unforgiveable. Sorry Dad

Wow. I almost freaked out because I thought it was a new Heliocentric album

It sounds very cool and the concept alone seems to merit checking it out.
