This is one of my favourite albums. It's absolutely gorgeous, and the story is soul crushing, although misses bittersweetness for the sake of realism.

Eels-Electro-Shock Blues
Whilst Stylus' famous "Best Record Ever Made Review" may be a bit of an exaggeration, it's still evidence E is amongst the best songwriters of the 90's and 00's. Perfect album.

^ Great stuff, I really love Everett's songwriting. I think this bit of trivia from Wikipedia makes the album so much better...

Quote:
Electro-Shock Blues was written largely in response to frontman Mark Oliver Everett's (more commonly known as E) sister's suicide and his mother's terminal lung cancer. Many of the songs deal with their decline, his response to loss, and coming to terms with suddenly becoming the only living member of his family (his father having died of a heart attack in 1982; Everett, then 19 years old, was the first to discover his body).
It's like... you have bands like My Chemical Romance spouting nonsense about kissing corpses and whatever, and then you have guys who really know what it's like, and they don't get nearly the same amount of recognition/success for their work. Depressing all in itself, really.

Lately I've been listening to Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins. A classic.
