The sound stays surprisingly faithful to the original songs, making the album sound more like the work of a tribute band (albeit the greatest one since Phish covered Quadrophenia) than musicians best known for innovative bands like Primus, Ratdog, and Tuatara. But open-minded Floyd fans will realize that Claypool's imitation is the sincerest form of hero worship -- er, flattery. ~ Bret Love

This band surprised me. That I liked it that is. This is probably my favorite album of theirs, but I like the Batholith compilation a lot. Great choices.

Tantric Porno, track 3, was where I started to realize I liked them. I grabbed all their work all at once about 6 months ago or so, and was playing them on random. It took a good while for me to wrap my head around but I'm very glad I did. Lots of great tracks...

Off of Amanita, I'd also recommend Limerick to those looking to check a few songs out...

Yeah, that's funny, Tantric Porno is when the album really started to click for me too. The album's particular fusion of psychedelic and shoegaze was something I never really experienced up until now, and I really dig it. Now that I think about it though, I guess shoegaze is pretty closely related to psychedelic rock. Very pleasantly surprised by this band.

The Damned - Friday The 13th E.P.
As far as I'm aware this is the only material The Damned recorded in their original time together that I don't own. Has a fantastic cover of the Rolling Stones song Citadel which was my primary reason for hunting this down.

Skylab - Oh! Skylab E.P.
Heard a couple of their songs on a couple of compilations and was impressed enough to check them out further. Figured I'd start with their E.P. rather than with their 2 albums as I wasn't really in the mood to listen to a boring long winded electronica album. Thankfully they're far more varied than that so I shall be checking those albums out very soon.

Maad - S/T
Maad were an Italian prog band who recorded only this album and another single (Which I also have and it's great). They're kind of a jazzy prog band with latin influences. This is probably the last thing people would expect me to listen to but it's really really good.

Ellen McIlwaine - The Real Ellen McIlwaine
Ellen McIlwaine is an extremely talented blues guitarist who would also perform folk & country. Sadly her record company decided to push her as a country diva and as a result a lot of her output isn't what she would have wanted to do. This album is her doing what she wants (Hence the title) and I decided to get this on the strength of her amazing cover of Stevie Wonder's Higher Ground. She did another album free from record company pressure called Everybody Needs It which is a bit more rock orientated which is in my 'to listen to' pile.

After about five listens in a row, I'm really starting to believe Feels is the best album by Animal Collective. I mean, this is my jam right now:

Twilight Hotel - When The Wolves Go Blind (2011)

Easily one of my favorite albums of 2011, and currently my favorite Americana, at least until the new William Elliott Whitmore comes out next week. Besides Americana, the pairing of Brandy Zdan and Dave Quanbury manage to mix pop, folk, and bluegrass together and filter it through a kind of scratchy and vintage guitar tone. Definitely something I think a lot of the members here could get into.
