So I've finally been discovering the genius that was Jay Reatard. I don't know why I started here, but I'm loving this album. It's got just the right blend of poppiness and punkiness...it's very addictive stuff. I love "The Shining" album cover, too. I don't know why it took me so long to check this guy out. I heard a lot about him on here when I first joined, and then again when he died but I still didn't check out any of his albums. He was even a Memphis native (my hometown). Ah well, I'm getting into it now.
Check out his album Blood Visions.

Beat Happening - You Turn Me On (1992)
There is not one weak song on this album. Each of the songs here are sweet, clever and stick in your head without being overly catchy or too poppy. Dare I say it this album seems to make The Magnetic Fields sound average (and I like them). They channel the more breezy care-free spirit of The Velvet Underground pretty well too.

Beth Orton - Central Reservation (1999)
A laid-back mix of singer/songwriter and downtempo. Although her voice can sound somewhat limited at times it has a very relaxing feel to it. There's some great songs on this album such as 'Stolen Car', 'Love Like Laughter' and the almost trip-hop 'Stars Seem To Weep' and 'Central Reservation (The Then Again Version)'. She has also collaborated with The Chemical Brothers on a number of occasions.

no indie poseur flavour of the weak here
Isn't that like the definition of this? Someone who isn't into indie would hear that in a commercial / movie etc.

You're just now getting into this album? It's a bit old there, Duck.

So you only listen to music that is less than five years old?

Yo Howard! Finally, someone else who appreciates this totally maligned band! And you picked my favourite album too. What can I say? You have taste man, you have taste!

Ben Watt (The other half of Everything But The Girl) worked with Beth on those tracks and they are great tracks. Not heard much from the guy over the last few years apart from a Buzzin' Fly compilation which is a shame as I love his chilled beats:

Real Estate - Days

On the surface, this is straight ahead twee-inspired dreampop-indie stuff, but there is something in those simple chord progressions that is really really addictive. There usually isn't any more than some reverb and chorus in these guitars, but somehow these guys do it just right. Everything in here is exactly what my ears want to be hearing right now.

I'm loving C.Cedille's first and so far only record.

There's apparently a lot of drama between the lead singer and the brainchild of this duo, so I don't think they will be making anymore music. The singer apparently left to join another band called "oh sunshine."

Whatever. C.Cedille's album is nothing but magic.

Thee Oh Sees - Carrion Crawler/ The Dream

It started a bit slow and I thought I might change the album, but something kept me going. And then it got good. Real good.
