40 WATT SUN - THE INSIDE ROOM (2011)

Ok, so for a metal album it's not exactly very heavy. It crawls at an excruciatingly slow pace, wading through the torrent of depressive tone and lyrical content it has been soaked in. I've also generally been one for a subdued, hazy vocal when it comes to doom metal, something that almost struggles not to be lost within the music behind a wall of psychedelia. 40 Watt Sun's Patrick Walker (of 'Warning') vocals are crisp, clear and I'll be damned if they haven't worked a strong, melodic, longing vocal into a repetitive, melancholy doom metal album in a way I was never sure I would enjoy so much.

Yppah - Eighty One (2012)
A nice electronic album and is quickly becoming one of my favourite releases of 2012 so far. Although he seems to be classed as trip-hop this album is certainly a lot more than that, with elements of ambient and post-rock it's an album that can appeal to a lot of people.

Ulver - Perdition City (2000)
I'm on a serious Ulver kick lately. Their early black metal stuff like their debut Bergtatt is great but their electronic stuff is even better. This album has a bit of a late-night jazzy feel which I quite like and 'The Future Sound Of Music' is the peak of the album for me. I need to explore this band more.

Sun Kil Moon - Ghosts of the Great Highway

I listened to this a couple times when I downloaded it some eons ago. "Si, Paloma" really stood out to me and since then I've fallen in love with it. While giving the song another listen on a bus passing through the Swedish countryside, I wondered why in the hell I haven't given the rest of the album the same attention. So I did. And it's really great, don't know how I missed it the first time. Particularly the tracks that precede and follow "Si Paloma". "Duh Koo Kim" is a massive 14-minute folk epic that is sad and slow but never boring. It starts quietly and slowly builds to a very gratifying climax. "Pancho Villa" is some of the most beautiful manipulation of dueling acoustic guitars I've ever heard.

A++ would recommend to anyone. The singer has a unique voice that is sometimes off key but I think that makes it all the more endearing. Now, off to give Red House Painters a whirl.

Aside from the very noticeable glitching in the drum recordings, it's pretty fffreaking flawless. "April Ethereal" and "Demon of the Fall" are in Opeth's top 5 heavy songs, in my opinion, and "When" is probably top 5 overall. Also, you should have seen my face when I realized each song ends with the name of the next song.

Ah, Sun Kil Moon in better times.
The record he brought out earlier this year, I couldn't get into at all.
Among The Leaves I think it was called, too long and I got the impression he had given up, which some may see as the albums charming quality. I don't.

The little flute sound in this song makes me wanna ****. It's so fucking jazzy

David Byrne and St. Vincent - Love This Giant

Yay, it's finally out! I've been waiting for this collaboration for a while...based on the couple singles they have put out I was very excited to hear how this turned out. So far, it's basically everything I would expect. It's got the best of both worlds, so if you are a fan of either artist this album won't disappoint. There is an interesting back and forth between the two artists...when St. Vincent takes the lead the music is clearly more Byrne-esque (Weekend In the Dust, I Should Watch TV) and vice versa (Who, Optimist). There are quite a few tracks where they both seem to get equal airtime (Lazarus). All in all, it's one of the better collaborations I've heard...ever. Plus that album cover - I can't stop staring at it. This one is gonna be getting some repeat listenings.
