Catherine Wheel - Chrome

I can't explain how happy I am to have discovered this band. Something about this album and their debut (Ferment) just do it for me. Brilliant Alt-Rock/Shoegaze.

The Gathering - Souvenirs (2003)
I gave their album Mandylion a shot some months back and found it a bit too overly operatic for my tastes. This album is more up my alley and is exactly what I was hoping to hear from this band. It's a difficult album to categorise as it moves on from the gothic metal of Mandylion and takes more influence from trip-hop and alternative rock. The first half of the album is flawless but there's a couple of tracks near the end that drag it down slightly. Overall it's a great album.

I recently discovered this Belfast band my local indie station. Over the past week I've listened to their debut mini-LP and follow up LP, Dead to Me, and now their brand new LP released this week. I first described their sound as a more up-tempo and surfy Crystal Stilts, essentially combining noise pop, post-punk, shoegaze, jangle pop, garage rock revival, and surf rock. Surf?! Yeah, it works pretty well with the jangly pop. While on Spotify, I previewed the title track for the new album (below) and was really impressed, even more so than with anything from the other two releases. Having now heard the album twice, it's clear they've dropped the surf aspect of their sound and I get a slightly more bleak, post-punk vibe out of it though still jangly. The Smiths and The Cure come through more than on the previous releases. Their sound also makes me think of Violens, who are also heavily influenced by 80s jangle pop and post-punk. So as you can gather it's not the most original sound, but it's a very solid album.
Man, I miss your posts! I've been looking for some new stuff to get into and look forward to exploring their discography. Thanks!

Now for my album:

Balmorhea - Stranger

For those of you who are familiar with what I usually listen to, you won't be surprised to see that it's another post-rock band. Balmorhea is currently a 6-piece instrumental ensemble. I'm kind of bad at the whole what-band-they-sound-like thing, but their sound is very multidimensional and it's pretty evident when you see them operate live. Almost all of them are multi-instrumentalists and switch quite often on stage. The string section was a later addition to the band, so experimentation still echoes in their latest album, Stranger, but the layers meld together so beautifully.

Loud + Clear Records - San Diego is Burning

A pretty good compilation so far. Not aware of many of the artists on the comp/label, but I will certainly be checking a few out. Discovered it through searching for Xerox My Hand on Spotify - and their track was pretty great.

Aww thanks! Hope you like their stuff.

As for the whole "what-band-they-sound-like thing", it's something I wish I could stop doing. I'm just no good at describing music without comparing it to other bands' sound. I do what I can.

I'd love to see your signature/links too, but the huge and obnoxious ones have caused me to block all signatures.
