Mutant Disco: A Subtle Discolation of the Norm

This is a disco/funk comp. And it's freaking epic.

Keiji Haino - Uchu Ni Karamitsuiteru Wago Itami

A 2005 Haino album that is also his first consisting of entirely electronic instruments such as theremins, air synths, and god knows what else. Keiji Haino always goes all out with finding a new direction in his music, and he successfully does so on this album with a plethora of strange sounds, noisy landscapes and an all-around wonderful avant-garde album. The title appropriately translates to "Tangled Up In The Universe, My Pain" in that this album is quite layered, tangled, and sometimes painful for those not accustomed to the genre .

I've learned it's best to listen to records that are really overhyped. Chances are I'll run into a few goods ones, such as this R&B/retro funk concept album.

I don't think there's a single person on this site who wouldn't enjoy this compilation.

I will have to take you up on this challenge then.

The Thing - Bag It!

The Thing is a Northern European free jazz group comprised of Mats Gustafsson on saxophones and electronics, Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten on bass, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums. Some of you may know the group from the album that they did with Naniah Cherry called "The Cherry Thing", which I recall seeing some members talk about on here. This is about as hard hitting as jazz can get without losing its sense of groove and playfulness.

For those of you that don't know, Paal Nilssen-Love is an incredible drummer. His spastic style always drudges on, no matter how exhausted he must be during the longer songs. Gustafsson has a very unique voice on the sax and it complements Nilssen-Love's ridiculously fast style quite well. Gustafsson's electonic work leaves a little bit to be imagined, but since this album has been released he has worked with Merzbow, Jim O'Rourke, Otomo Yoshihide, and many others that have clearly lent him a hand in the world of harsh noise and experimental electronics. Haker-Flaten is a great bassist as well, but his work doesn't stand out on this album as much as it has on other ones. Together they have quite a captivating chemistry.

Here's a video:
