It's got to have fairly long stretches with no words (just music or beat or something) so we can use it under dialogue. It's gotta be serious, and it's gotta be gritty. I'm thinking something actually about prison or getting busted or something. Something about how much it sucks to be prison. Not "boo yah, bein' a gangsta rules", but more "damn, i miss my kids and my girl" sorta stuff. Gettin' it?

Bluesy, soulful is good. Cheery bad.

Thanks much.
definitely the best acoustic ever!

Default Need help getting into harder stuff

To make it brief, my taste in music has gone through a lot of different changes, and these last couple years I've found myself getting into a wide variety of softer stuff. For example, some of my favorites this year are:

Patrick Watson - Wooden Arms
Andrew Bird - Noble Beast
Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest

I tend to get really picky with the style of harder music and strongly dislike metal, such as the new Mastadon album, which I tried to enjoy. Some of the heavier things I've enjoyed this year are:

The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
The Mars Volta - Octahedron

I know those two are particularly "hard" or "heavy", but there in lies my problem. Where do I go?

Why are you trying to force yourself to like something that you really don't like? It doesn't make much sense to me, but okay.

Give these a try:

The Deftones - White Pony or Saturday Night Wrist
The Pixies - Doolittle or Surfer Rosa
Silversun Pickups - Carnavas
Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream

Enjoy

Check out Devin Townsend's solo material, it's heavy but not that abrasive. Best albums to check out would be Teria, Accelerated Evolution, Infinity and Biomech: Ocean Machine in that order.

What was already suggested isn't a bad place to start I suppose with Patton. If you find yourself liking that I'd definitely try Disco Volante by Mr. Bungle and Suspended Animation by Fantômas.

I need some up beat music similar to kings of leon - taper jean girl, the dandy warhols - bohemian like you or idlewild you held the world in your arms. That sort of stuff.
