Cool

Three Days Grace, Chevelle, Foo Fighters, R.E.M., There's a few pretty cool alternative rock bands.

Thanks. Never heard of Chevelle (i'll check it out), but I like the other 3.

Also, are there any good alternative/indie compilations lying around? I'm afraid to download any mixtapes for fear of coming into contact with metal or electronic or other weird stuff. Or really any compilations that don't have metal/electronic/weird on them...?

My current tastes include Arctic Monkeys, the Shins, Radiohead, stuff like that (popular, I guess you would say), but I want to branch out, so anything in this genre is welcome. And then I will listen to your suggestions on grooveshark . Thanks!
I'd say setting up a last.fm account would be the way to go.

I had one, but all I got were Jack Johnson and Iron & Wine suggestions. Maybe I'll revisit it.

ok i want suggestions for great albums from 2009 but not anything like **** buttons, the big pink, the yeah yeah yeahs, atlas sound, or any of that electro-pop **** that pitchfork seems so painfully fond of. i want some stuff that will really kick my ass

EDIT: to give you somee ideas of what i liked, i really liked these bands' albums from 2009:

girls
woods
grizzly bear,
animal collective,
mount eerie
maudlin of the well
the antlers
beirut
morrissey
the flaming lips

just to name a few.

The same person who showed me Beirut, showed me Citizen Cope and Alaska in Winter.
Try those.

Default Turn me on to some new/old music.

Im looking for someone to turn me onto some new bands or some old bands that I may not have heard of. I am big into rock and roll with a blues emphasis. I like soulfull lead vocals, Hammond B-3 organ/Fender Rhoades, honkey tonk piano, slide guitar, and of course drums and bass. Some of the stuff Im into is Beatles, Stones, Allmans, Tower of Power, Neville Bros., The Boss, Derek and the Dominos, SRV, Hendrix, The Band, Stevie Wonder, Steely Dan, Beach Boys, Van Morrison, CCR, Doobies, early Chicago, Kansas, Joe ****er, Pink Floyd, etc. Im also big into Funk ie, P-Funk, James Brown, Maceo, Deep Banana Blackout, and soul/Motown/R&B ie, Solomon Burke, Wilson Picket, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, and Aretha. If anyone knows any younger bands that fit into this style, or some older bands that fit this style that I may not have heard of, turn me on. Im dying to find some undiscovered gems for my collection. Thanks!

Looks like you pretty much know your music dude, why don't you try searching for stuff by yourself? You could type into Google "soul blog" "progressive rock blog". You could make an account on Pandora.com. You could go onto Wikipedia and look up the side projects of your favorite bands. Also this web site is pretty much loaded with music you haven't heard, just search around, and whenever you hear a suggestion- just youtube it. If you like it, find the album and give it a download.

Welcome to Music Banter by the way, hopefully you'll decide to stick around and see what you'd be missing if you took off and never came back in the next five minutes like so many other people who start these kinds of threads do.

I went through every page of this: Long list of bands people are into

There is some great music in this forum if you're willing to look: Member Journal's I would suggest looking up The CellerTapes, Gavin B., Anteater, and Comus. They have all made signature threads. Also Bulldog has a sick 100 albums list and Right-Track has a Member Journal with tons of cool Northern Soul, and ToeAndo has a great Soul Compilation somewhere around here. Check out Gavin B's 100 reggae songs in the Editor's Pick, where there is all kinds of great shit.

What I'm saying is this, don't ask the forum on your first post to jump down here when you'll probably never come back and give you artists... even though I did. Instead, use the forum to find music and get to know everyone on the way. If the reason you're here is to find new stuff cause you're bored, stay around you'll always have a solution to that.

Here's a great youtube channel: Jazz/soul funk

There's this: Soul Jazz Records

And try out some African Music in this great blog.

Hope I helped,
-Schizotypic.
