Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures (1979)

Oh c'mon. Being English, over 30 and liking the music that I do, you did'nt think I would NOT include Joy Division did you? The question was which album. Both this and Closer are unbelievably great records but I plumped for this as it has a hint of vulnerability. Not just Ian Curtis's obvious stamp but the whole band too. The production was full of new techniques, the band were unsure of how to record an album which gives a raw power that is still astonishing nearly 30 years later.

I won't comment on individual tracks as most of you should know a lot of the album or at the least, be aware of their sound. Quite simply it is one of the best debut albums ever and 'Day Of The Lords' still makes my spine tingle.

Just in case you don't know their sound:

I don't have much to say except that Unknown Pleasures is absolutely classic. And I would definitely pick it over Closer as well. Honestly I've never understood all the hype about Closer.

I do love their Peel sessions too. They were very tight live. I'm sure I read that RT has seen them live; if so, lucky lucky bugger!

I recently got a 2 disc 'Best Of' purely for the fact that the 2nd disc has got the Peel sessions. I'm guessing you would'nt mind giving that a listen

I quite like sad, melancholic music but for the right reasons. When it's wrapped up in cutesy little bows of 4 minute radio friendly muzak then i'm not interested (a couple of nameless bands come to mind). When it's stretched, layered, measured and ever so slightly tortured then let's have it. Archive are a band that are relatively new to me but I have instantly fell in love with. Archive are not original. They steal little bits from Radiohead, Porcupine Tree all with a measure of atmospheric Trip Hop thrown in. They sound like none of it and all of it. With a couple of tracks clocking in at over sixteen minutes it's not everyones cup of tea but tracks such as 'Numb' sounding like a belated leftover from Massive Attack's 'Mezzanine' and 'Finding it So Hard' utilising an electronic drum template that Radiohead would be proud of, you have an album that is high on emotion and atmosphere. The highlight is the magnificent opener 'Again' that is a terrific slow builder of which an excerpt is found here ( the original is approx sixteen minutes):
I thought me and my brother were the only other fans out there :P Great band! Can't wait for the new album haven't heard to much about it though.

Slightly off topic but I have to say that St. Vincent album is bloody excellent. Definitely worth the wait.
