Always thought "Math Rock" was a stupid label for a genre... I dunno, because all rock is mathematical in one way or another, be it counting rhythyms, time signatures, etc... so what is particularly "math" about that genre.... is it particularly loved by math students and math geeks? Does it require that the composers / musicians incorporate some tricky mathematical patterning when composing songs... are the lyrics cryptic mathematical references?

Unless those questions can be answered, this is one very hazy genre classification...

actually you're basically correct math rock is basically rock music but with some mathematical scheme, or with odd time signatures (like 5/4). or sometimes with beats that use odd rhythms. basically math rock is rock musicians showing off their compositional skills, by using math to write the song (i know kinda weird but that's basically all it is)

In a related note and on topic to the thread, I've been realizing recently that I can actually sing a LOT of showtunes.
if and when i ever have kids and they have any questions about people looking different i will pull up this video.

Wow! I was closer to the definition than I thought... thanks for the clarification though!

Lets see. Rock music with complex structures, odd time signatures and unusual rhythms, nope these are not traits associated with prog whatsoever.

I've never read someone's description of math rock and could figure out why bands like King Crimson and Henry Cow can't fall into the category, or even bands like Tool. The description is way too vague, it can cover a whole lot of ground and yet indie kids keep insisting on how specific it is.

Math and Post Rock is prog for indie kids. I admit I should try getting into them more, they have been hit or miss with me, they're great stuff like Battles and Godspeed. But I can't get into Slint or the more generic post rock that just drags on and on and on. Experimental music is supposed to have a sense of adventure, just making droning noise is lazy.

boo boo, if you can listen to a selection of math rock, prog and post-rock songs and honestly believe they're all the same bloody thing, you have no goddamn brain.
