Someone should do a "Beginner's Guide to the Difference between Math, Prog and Post Rock" with 3 songs from each

Prog = odd timings and chord progressions in the context of traditional songwriting.

Post Rock = odd timing and chord progression in the context of doing the opposite of what a traditional songwriter would (usually ends up meaning its just really slow and droning...though there are exceptions)

Math Rock = Odd timing and chord progression with absolutely no regard for traditional songwriting...the math writes the music, basically.

Other people may have other opinions on this, but that is how I distinguish them in my head.

That's actually a pretty clear distinction Duga.... I kinda like it... I think I'll tune my mindset the same way when i am thinking of the three genres you just described.

That's pretty good, I'll accept that. When prog bands use classical music structures or jazzy improvisation that's still following tradition. I do think Post rock and Math rock are consistant with the ideals of avant garde.

Haha that's one of the better descriptions of math rock and post rock I've heard.

As far as avant-garde goes... I've always looked at it as more of an umbrella genre that encompasses a collection of different, but kind of similar genres. Kind of like how "Extreme Metal" encompasses death metal, doom metal, black metal, grindcore, gore grind, death/doom, blackened death metal, etc. etc.

For me avant-garde is the approach that destroys genres rather then encompassing them.
