It's "uncool" to like a band if your parents like them.

No chance that my mom and I will share the same musical taste. She doesn't share my passion for music and hardly listens to it. When she does it's like really golden oldies of bands from the 50s but none of those I like. Mostly really old country songs, smooth ballads or even German Schlagers (horrible!).

Growing up my parents were really my only way to get and/or hear new music, so I really grew to appreciate their tastes alot, though I have to say I've always related better to my dad's tastes than my mom's. He of course liked the 70's rock guys like Led Zep. He also loved Aerosmith, U2, Yes, and many others. I remember when I was 15 I stole his 'Rattle and Hum' cassette tape and listened to it over and over for weeks. I still have it actually. He used to make all kinds of home made cassettes and mix tapes. It's because of him I even gave Vanilla Fudge a chance, though I don't know if that's a good thing or not. lol. My mom likes more poppy stuff, but the one thing she has always loved that I really took and ran with was blues. Mostly just the well known artists like BB King and SRV. And I remember they both loooooved Van Halen and would see them every time they came to town and I used to share that love too. I've kind of grown out of liking them so much these days though.
I still make mix tapes for both my parents because I feel like I have a pretty good grasp on what they both like. But, I have to say that as I've gotten older my music tastes have actually veered further away from what my parents like, and not become more similar.

I think I borrowed a Roxy Music compilation off my dad once although he's more into Bryan Ferry's solo stuff.

My Dad was a teddy boy, so lots of early Rock n Roll. According to him Buddy Holly was the king of Rock n Roll, not Elvis. In fact I remember being bought up to hate Elvis from an early age. I also remember him buying albums by REM & The Smiths & having a go at him because I already owned them.

My mother basically liked what was in the charts in the late 60s onwards and tended to just buy singles compilations of whatever was out at the time. She did like a bit of glam rock but mostly the singles bands like The Sweet & Suzi Quattro. She's quite partial to electronic music & brass band music too. She even liked a couple of metal tunes,Run To The Hills was a favourite of hers.

I suppose I rebelled against them getting into hard rock & metal. I remember the look of horror on her face when I started buying Ozzy & Alice albums. Although she realised soon enough they were harmless. But soon I later realised I would rather have been bought up listening to my parents eclectic mix of stuff rather than having a couple of classic rock bores as parents having the same old Led Zep & Pink Floyd albums as everybody else.

My parents were pretty oblivious to good music (mom & stepdad). My dad's a prog and Earth, Wind and Fire junky.

In terms of my father's musical taste, he likes the classics like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, CCR but he also has a love disco whereas my mother has never heard a disco song she liked. Her favorites include The Who, Ramones, Echo and the Bunnymen and Sam Cooke. In terms of the music I've introduced them to, they both like Sebadoh, The Strokes, Bat For Lashes, and Beulah. Both love the title track off of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea and although my mother enjoys Elliott Smith, my father can't stand him.
