It was at the beginning of the post-punk revival so it felt fresh and new at the time. I can see how someone hearing it for the first time now would find it boring though since post-punk has been kind of revived to death since then.

It's funny how genres change their meanings over time. Post-punk today does not mean what it meant back in the ought's.

It doesn't? What does it mean now?

Post-punk today follows the sound of old post-punk bands of the seventies and eighties I.e Bauhaus, Gang Of Four, Joy Division. The "post-punk" revival of the oughts was more interested in angular guitar riffs and skinny jeans and making us dance. Not nearly as brooding as the music under that guise occurring today.

Your definition of revival sounds a lot like Gang of Four to me except for the skinny jeans (I never paid attention to their fashion).

Edit: in response to mid 00's post punk
Yeah Yeah Yeahs, LCD Soundsystem, Bloc Party, The National, Franz Ferdinand, The Rapture, The Hives, Interpol, The White Stripes, The Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, Art Brut, early Black Keys, Deerhunter, Spoon are all a few of my favorite bands that thrived in that time. It pried my mind open to all sorts of music. So yes, it's certainly my favorite era.

I think Gang of Four were more focused on making people dance than being brooding.
