You will make a great politician answering a question with a question.

It is not a matter of being a fan or a non fan. I am just curious as to why he should be included in a Hall Of Fame.

You see I thought that generally a Hall of Fame would be based on certain criteria. When I voted Yes for the Beach boys based on Influence, originality etc but was told that that was f*cked ethos by someone who wrote this

Just know this: If you hated everything Led Zeppelin ever did and thought they were utter trash, it should still be difficult to vote no. Their influence on modern rock is incredible. Though it would be inconceivable to say that the world wouldn't have any hard rock without Led Zeppelin, it would certainly be much, MUCH lamer.
Now I have heard only about 3 Zappa albums in my life and I have read his autobiography and so therefore like to think I understand his place in musical history.

But.............. I am confused that if I vote yes it would not be a correct vote based on my limited hearing.

But................knowing that he is of Influence, has originality etc I should be voting yes

But................If I do vote yes my ethos would be.....well you know.

So do I vote no as it is, I think, a popularity contest of sorts?

Do you see my dilemma?

I would say: use your own criteria. Just the same as you listen to a band and judge it on your own criteria then the same applies here. I didn't vote for the Beach Boys because as far as I'm concerned , one album isn't enough to convince me of their influence or greatness.

With Zappa he is a true one off, extraordinarily gifted and also promoted the idea of making music for oneself unaffected by genre.

Each to their own in the end in terms of aesthetics and you know and I both that but I really do not understand how a music board as educated as this one has no understanding of the influence of The Beach Boys.

I am no Led Zeppelin fan but it would be utterly churlish of me to deny their influence. In terms of vocal harmonies The Beach Boys and The Everly Brother and, later, the Bee Gees influence can be heard to this very day. Listen to the new Animal Collective album as an example. I have had friends in various groups over the years who cite them as the groups that they listened to when aspiring to put vocal harmonies together. So this dismissal of them on this Hall of Fame thread makes me think that is is just a popularity poll and therefore a touch meaningless.

Be that as it may if I am going to vote in a meaningful Hall OF fame Frank Zappa is a yes for all the obvious reasons.

To me this is the artist most overrated by MB, I thinks he's so mediocre it bothers me, but I understand this is an unpopular stance.

If you're posting in the music forums make sure to be thoughtful and expressive, if you're posting in the lounge ask yourself "is this something that adds to the conversation?" It's important to remember that a lot of people use each thread. You're probably not as funny or clever as you think, I know I'm not.

Whoever doesn't vote for Frank Zappa gets a kick in the junk. I'm already a bit suprised that five people have voted against his induction into the MB Hall of Fame.
