Has to be a yes from me, Sonic Youth are one of my favourite bands. They are a huge influence on loads of indie and alternative bands since the 80's and Thurston and Lee are one of the greatest guitar duos ever. Not to mention a back catalog that 95% of bands can only dream about and weep.

It's a yes for me, I don't think I need to go into a whole spiel about how influential or integral they were for the development of music or whatever... I just really like them, and Kim Gordon is one of my heroes.

Truth.

I guess I just respect her as a female musician with the attitude that I got to see from her as well. When I was younger I idolized Gordon and marveled at the fact that she was a chick rocking out on stage in a band like Sonic Youth, and although of course there are many female musicians (some much more talented than Kim Gordon) who represented the same thing, Sonic Youth were probably one of the first who I noticed and who inspired me.

It's the same with Kim Deal. Average bassist for a great band - and female.
She also did a lot of vocals and, I think, writing for SY.
Considering the music they made, I think Kim Gordon deserves credit on every front because her bass playing was kinda perfect for SY (underdeveloped but with soul/intuition that added to the band), she did other worthy things besides bass (her weird untalented vocals are also a plus in my book) and, uh, she's a girl - so extra credit?

Regardless of all that: of course YES to Sonic Youth

I'd just like to add that when I say that I admired her because she was female in a rock band, I don't mean to say that girls deserve extra credit because of their gender. Females shouldn't get extra kudos just because they are female, because then it kind-of comes out as saying that girls are rubbish at music so any girl who manages to make some kind of audible noise on an instrument deserves credit.

I meant that in the late 70s - 80s especially, although still today, rock music is generally a domain still dominated by men and for a long time in history it was not often that you saw a gutsy and determined girl rock out on stage with such passion and making such noise. Also as a female myself, seeing Kin in Sonic Youth made her an icon much more relatable to me than any other male rockstars.

(Engine, I'm not criticising anything you said, in fact I agree with you entirely, but your post just reminded me that I should just make this known! )

Not to mention, Kim Gordon was hot! She's getting a bit old now, but she doesn't look half bad for her age. Now Kim Dealm... she didn't age too well.

Where would Kathy Foster and Freddy Feedback be without Kim Gordon? Where?

Know who was like a totally awesome bass player? Jill Cunniff.
