I bagged me a Seagate EHD for around £130 about a year ago.



I've only got about 85GBs in my entire library now, and it's got a capacity for 300, so it's serving me well. Thin enough to fit in your pocket, and it's probably dirt cheap by now, so worth having if you're after a bit of extra space.

Physical collection:

Vinyl: around 250 albums, 850 singles, mainly obscure and rare items.
CD: Knocking on for around 1000 CDs
Digital: Pretty much non existant. I don't download music, prefering to hold the CDs in my hand, but what there is, is almost completely ripped from the CD collection. I honestly doubt I own 100 tracks exclusively digital.

I think it's fair to say most of us are including MP3s ripped from our own CDs when talking about digital libraries. Glad to have someone else on board that values physical albums though.

Now of course, there are many youguns here who have 50 MP3 albums for every actual CD they own.

I'm proud to say that 3/4 of my collection is also represented by a physical CD. Maybe a bit less than that, actually...but it's close. The remaining albums are the ones I didn't deem worthy of a buy, or I haven't gotten to it yet.

i do have about 600 cds, but they're stuffed away in boxes on another continent. just too impractical...

so why all the external drives? internals are cheaper and less liable to go bump or get lost...

The last time one of my HDs got destroyed, it was on my laptop and the reading pin inside it's internal HD just broke while it was playing a movie. Admittedly, I was on a boat (research vessel) at the time and the engine was causing a sort of constant tremble which I assume must have been a contributing factor, but the thought of something like that happening and just wiping away that collection which I've spent so many hours of my life putting together and meticulously tagging is a bit daunting .. I consider a backup to be essential!

This collection is, after all, basically what I've scraped together since the last time I lost it all

130 quid for only 300 gigs? That seems a little overpriced to me, or perhaps my conversions are off... but when I got my 1TB hard drive it was $100 American.

The angle of that picture almost makes it look like the Monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. I wonder if they did that on purpose or if it's just a sleep deprived distortion in my mind...

Anyhow after doing a quick check up on my hard drive today I saw that I officially hit the 180 gb mark for music which didn't shock me anywhere near as much as when I inventoried my CD collection and found that I've reached 80. It may sound like a small number, but this time last year I was sitting at around 50 so to pick up 30 CD's in a one-year time span is quite shocking, especially as my hard drive was only sitting at about 70 gb this time last year.
