X.A Cute Feat Ari Up - Me Done.

I rediscovered The Slits over the summer and wondered what the hell lead singer Ari Up was up too and the answer seems to be guest vocals on a variety of tracks with artists such as Dubblestandart and the mighty upsetter himself- Lee 'Scratch' Perry. This with X.A Cute whom I know nothing about that but this is a great slice of Ragga infused Dancehall Reggae and got plenty of airplays.

Dubmatix Feat. Ranking Joe - Give Thanks & Praises (Nate Wize Ranking Bass Remix)

The boys from Canada once again get on the remix trail and up the bass and have some great skanking vocals. Perfect working music that got me through that crapfest of a job I endured through the summer.

Armored Saint - La Raza

A typical hard working but decidedly average Heavy Metal band made their first album in god knows how many years and god damn it, it's good. I first heard it virtually comatose in the back of a car driving back from Switzerland through to Germany coming back from the ridiculously muddy Sonisphere festival there and it was just one of those times that still ticked all the right boxes in terms of atmosphere, surroundings etc that you think of for years to come. No vid but the title track is stellar.

Evol Intent - Call To Arms

Courtesy of a DnB mix that Freebase did me around 18 months that I still listen to. This song was just perfect in ear listening at work when I needed a jolt of enegy at 4 a.m. The drum track just blows you away on decent headphones.

Foals - Spanish Sahara

Oh boohoo Foals changed their sound. Instead of refining their Math Rock tinged sound, they decided to get a little introspective and give us songs with layers and ambience. I adore this album and it's been played to death at home. Such a great build up.

Fat Freddy's Drop - Shiverman

What? jackhammer likes FFD? No shit sherlock! As soon as they announced that they were touring over here I bought tickets within the first week and they opened with this when I saw them at the weekend and the album version doesn't do them justice. A brilliant live band that rocked my arse!

Fang Island's self titled

was the soundtrack to not only my summer, but my entire year. This is possibly the greatest feel good record ever made (IMO!!!!1), and definitely my favorite album of 2010.

A couple bands/tracks that defined my summer methinks-

Caribou - She's The One

Summer has always screamed to me baroque pop, and Caribou do a durned fine job at delivering that want in spades with a a bit of Animal Collectiveish flair so I don't feel like a complete doofus showing it to friends who ask me what could possibly be making me smile when I'm interning in a real estate office.

Moon Safari - In The Countryside

What would my summer have been without these guys to cheer me up? I've made it no secret that I consider Moon Safari to be not only the best of the modern progressive rock bands, but also the best damn band of the last 15 years period. 5-part vocal harmonies of Beach Boys class coupled with a near epidemic sense of wonder and enthusiasm makes anything of theirs sheer joy to listen to. Hence, if there was ever an outfit that was the embodiment of summer in the whole of its' various associations and sentiments, its these proggy pop perfectionists.

MGMT - It's Working

Typically enough, I find MGMT a lot more interesting when they pretend to be The Zombies instead of whatever it was their debut was pointing to, AKA generic Indie pap that pimply 14 year olds flock to like flies to rotting meat. Oddly enough, this album did wonders at some of the parties I attended during my free time over the last few months, including landing me two dates. Hooray for pretending to give a shit about what my generation likes!

In other news, Congratulations is fine psych-indie-pop record, and a summer milestone for me for better...and best.

Here's my list and a little bit too much info about me. The format's a little different as I'm listing albums (with the exception of the last), but mentioning my favorite tracks from said albums. I've spent way too much time compiling this and I'm sure no one will read to the whole thing or listen to the songs.

Com Truise – Cyanide Sisters EP
This sun-drenched synth funk EP has really been a breath of fresh air in my electronic listening. The synth waves and bass are amazing. Many have been referring to it as chill-wave, but I don’t know enough about that genre to comment, really. Other than to me it just sounds like synth-funk influenced by Boards of Canada and other IDM acts. Somebody’s always gotta make up new genre names any time something sounds ever so slightly different. My favorite track is probably BASF Ace but there’s no video for it.

Another song: Slow Peels

The Idle Race – The Birthday Party
A great little psychedelic pop/rock album from 1968. It clocks in at just over 30 minutes and leaves you wanting more. Fans of The Kinks and early Beatles should surely enjoy this. Not all the songs are this upbeat but it has a great vibe throughout.

Phoenix – Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Early in the summer, I found myself pretty happy and wanted to maintain that mood by listening to more upbeat music than my usual mix of post-hardcore, punk and antisocial electronic music. I’d known about this album since last year, and avoided the hype as it wasn’t really in my realm anyway. Somehow I ended up picked it up, and found it immensely enjoyable. It’s just great on a sunny day when you’re in an upbeat mood. I ended up on a quest to find equally uplifting albums. I started to date a girl and sort of got infatuated with her and so when the sun was shining I was REALLY happy. Too bad that ended in an inexplicable way. But that's life.

Band of Horses – Infinite Arms
Not all the stuff I listened to this summer was upbeat in nature, some was quite introspective, as is the case with this album. I really enjoyed the band’s last two albums but was a bit weary of this one after hearing the first single, Compliments. However, I quickly fell in love with nearly the entire album and have played it a lot. This song is my favorite. Strangely enough I quite dislike country but enjoy a fair share of country-tinged indie rock. Factory is another favorite on the album.

The Black Keys – Brothers
Released on the same day as Band of Horses’ album this year, I’ve also really enjoyed this album. It’s packed full of gold, really, with a full range of emotions and only a couple of mediocre songs. My favorite being this one, which makes me think of my relationship with my ex. I also really love Too Afraid To Love You (I think I was), Never Gonna Give You Up (haha but I did), These Days.

Jamie Lidell – Compass
I was hesitant about this album, given the fact that I haven’t liked that much of Jamie Lidell’s solo work. His debut was a pretty great experimental electronic album, but the soul stuff he put out on Multiply wasn’t really to my taste, and I heard his last album Jim was even more white-boy soul, so I never listened to it. However I know he’s a very talented producer with a great voice, having been part of Super_Collider which was amazing. After hearing the first single, The Ring, I decided I needed to get it as it reminded me of a more pop Super_Collider. My favorite songs on the album are actually Coma Chameleon and Gypsy Blood, though. The whole thing is quite varied with only one song that I find a little too fake-soul for my taste.

The Smiths – Hatful of Sorrow
I finally “got” The Smiths this summer. I’d known several of their songs before, and my ex was a big fan, but didn’t often subject me to the music. I never had anything against it, just never felt the need to listen. Well I had tried this compilation once before, maybe last year, then played it again one day while laying at the park alone on a weekend afternoon. Something clicked. I think it’s the fact that I can totally relate to many of Morrissey’s lyrics, and I had never bothered to actually listen before. So since then, I’ve familiarized myself with all of their releases, but this is the release that broke me. “I dreamt about you last night, and I fell out of bed twice.” This is the kind of shit that makes me wish my ex didn’t spend 3+ years of our 4.5 year relationship completely absorbed in school. Fuck you, and fuck me too. Anyway, Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before is also a favorite. I actually remember seeing this video on MTV quite a bit back in the day. Fantastic stuff.

The Thermals – Now We Can See
This is the album that made me a fan. I’d heard the previous one maybe one time before and liked it alright, but I don’t know maybe I connected with the lyrics of this one more. I found it rather upbeat also, fitting the mood I was searching for this summer. This song also reminds me of my ex relationship. It’s kind of a “getting over it” song, coming to terms and feeling comfortable with my decision.

Yeasayer – Odd Blood
I enjoyed their debut, though I felt it only had a few great songs and the rest were mediocre. I put off listening to their more recent effort partly for that reason I guess. But something told me it would do me good, perhaps providing me with some great summer tunes. Turns out, I really like the album. The first song that really did it for me was O.N.E. The 80s video kind of gave it a different feel though, so I hesitate to show it. The second one that really struck me, and has struck me even more than O.N.E., is Madder Red. I’ll avoid posting the official video for that too because it sucks and distracts from the song. But goddamn do I love this song. Lyrics like “I turn away just when you want me, I know that home is where you want me” kind of describe the situation with my ex a little bit, I was pushed away and distanced because of her studies, but when she did make time I withdrew. And then the climax of the song for me (starting at 2:18), “Never gave a thought to an honorable living, always had sense enough to lie. It’s getting hard to keep pretending, I’m worth your time.” Goddamn. Beautiful.

O.N.E.

sElf - "Could You Love Me Now?"
A new single by sElf, who hasn’t released a proper album since 2005 and that was just a collection of leftover or reworked songs from an album that was never released due to record label fuck-ups. Anyway, it’s quite pop and a bit cheesy, but I’ve grown to really like it. I’m a big sappy pussy.

Violens - "Acid Reign"
First single from the long-awaited album by this band comprised of members from the underappreciated Lansing-Dreiden. I like the song but not as much as some of the songs from their debut EP. Really anticipating the album later this month, so I've played the song a lot.

Basically this summer I learned to stop taking music so seriously and that I better take notice of what puts me in a good mood and what doesn’t before I ruin the rest of my life.

I've heard a few singles from their previous album, which I thought were ok, but that's it. I do have a feeling I could enjoy both of their albums if I actually gave them a chance, given my new less-serious fun/happy-seeking outlook on music. This particular song is not bad...though I had to search for a different video as that one is pretty shit quality.

I'll have to check out the other stuff posted in this thread so far...just felt like commenting on yours since your post appeared after I compiled and submitted mine.

I know wat'cha mean brother. MGMT, like a lot of lauded indie-related music for me, are very hit and miss. Congratulations just happened to be more of the former than the latter for once, and it was a nice surprise.

You've got one hell of a nice selection on your post though. Lots of golden artists...including a few I need to check out....

Donovan-Season of the Witch

Trippy, cool, perfect length. I downloaded the album and this is definitely the highlight track. A bunch of boring, acoustic-y songs that I dislike....Donovan's big hit, "Mellow Yellow" sounds a lot like this too so I guess the dude's a one-trick pony.

Crystal Castles-Courtship Dating

Best song Crystal Castles have ever recorded. I feel like I've heard it before, when I was a kid or in a dream or something, but its really unique and catchy. The effect on the vocals is amazing, it makes Alice Glass sound like a robot feeling emotion for the first time.

Sleigh Bells-Kids

Its sort of clear that I really like pop songs sung by girls with a lot of effects on their voices. Of course its on the soundtrack to my summer. Its about a beach.
Not a bad track on Sleigh Bell's debut album, this one was my favorite for a month and a half but it keeps switching.

Beck-Fuckin' with my Head

He sounds angry in a restrained way. Not like he's gonna kill her, like he'll smile a little brighter on the day that she's miserable. No idea what genre it is, which is awesome. Highlight track of the album. Sweet ass baseline.

Alright, so songs of my summer:

'Brave as a Noun' by Andrew Jackson Jihad

This was definitely my most played song of the summer (it doesn't hurt it's like a minute long). I pretty much listened to it as a laid in bed trying to fall asleep every night.

'Electric Feel' by MGMT

I guess I wasn't hip enough to catch the first time around, but I really fell for this over the summer. It's got such a great pop bass line, and it's well known that I can't resist one of those.

'The Breaks' by The Black Keys

Saw these guys in concert and for my money this was tied with 'Thickfreakness', which they opened with, for the best performance. I can't believe I hadn't give The Big Come Up more time. Great intro by the way haha.

'How We Know' by The Thermals

I spent a lot of time listening to Fuckin' A and this song and 'Our Trip' were my favorites. This is The Thermals second greatest achievement, right after 'Here's Your Future', IMO.

'Stutter' by Elastica

Such a random band for me to get into, but their debut is awesome and even if it gets labeled as "Britpop" it really sounds nothing like the others and is very Violent & Funky.

'WTF?' by OK Go

I *really* didn't like OK Go's new sound first listen, but after reassessing it this week I have found a handful of songs from the new album that I dig a lot.\, which makes it pretty much like every other OK Go album--a couple great singles, a few other gems, and a bunch of filler. This is the cream of the crop. The bass line and that guitar solo are both excellent.

'Nature of the Experiment' by Tokyo Police Club

Another simple bass part that I fall for. I love their debut EP, and this is my most played from that release.

'Road Sings Always Look Better Over Your Shoulder' by Defiance, Ohio

I always crank up the intro verse. Love those lyrics, they really resonate with me. The most mellow Defiance song on that album but probably the most "beautiful" too.

'CMND/CTRL' by Deftones

This is my summer heavy tune, the kind of song you mow the lawn and listen to. I didn't like all of Diamond Eyes, but I'll still be playing this one years from now. Short and angry

'Cigarette' by Fiction Plane

My friend gave me this Fiction Plane album. I love the simple little guitar riff at the beginning. Great hook don't hurt neither. This is an acoustic performance of the song because I can't find the studio version on youtube.

'Cop' by Alkaline Trio

Alk Trio has the most plays on my last.fm and have released a ton of music. Yeah, the quality has steadily declined since their high point, their debut album, Goddamnit, and this is my favorite song from that release. Fuckin' cops.

There aren't many studio versions of Alkaline Trio songs on youtube and the live videos suck too. In other words, find a better way than this to listen to the song.

'Plug in Baby' by Muse

I got into a semi-serious bike accident just as this song came on, so yeah it's gonna be a song of the summer haha. I happen to really like it too; it's one of my favorite Muse songs.

I pretty much listened to it as a laid in bed trying to fall asleep every night. 'Electric Feel' by MGMT I guess I wasn't hip enough to catch the first time around, but I really fell for this over the summer. It's got such a great pop bass line, and it's well known that I can't resist one of those. 'The Breaks' by The Black Keys Saw these guys in concert and for my money this was tied with 'Thickfreakness', which they opened with, for the best performance. I can't believe I hadn't give The Big Come Up more time. Great intro by the way haha. 'How We Know' by The Thermals I spent a lot of time listening to Fuckin' A and this song and 'Our Trip' were my favorites. This is The Thermals second greatest achievement, right after 'Here's Your Future', IMO. 'Stutter' by Elastica Such a random band for me to get into, but their debut is awesome and even if it gets labeled as "Britpop" it really sounds nothing like the others and is very Violent & Funky. 'WTF?' by OK Go I really didn't like OK Go's new sound first listen, but after reassessing it this week I have found a handful of songs from the new album that I dig a lot.\, which makes it pretty much like every other OK Go album--a couple great singles, a few other gems, and a bunch of filler. This is the cream of the crop. The bass line and that guitar solo are both excellent. 'Nature of the Experiment' by Tokyo Police Club Another simple bass part that I fall for. I love their debut EP, and this is my most played from that release. 'Road Sings Always Look Better Over Your Shoulder' by Defiance, Ohio I always crank up the intro verse. Love those lyrics, they really resonate with me. The most mellow Defiance song on that album but probably the most "beautiful" too. 'CMND/CTRL' by Deftones This is my summer heavy tune, the kind of song you mow the lawn and listen to. I didn't like all of Diamond Eyes, but I'll still be playing this one years from now. Short and angry 'Cigarette' by Fiction Plane My friend gave me this Fiction Plane album. I love the simple little guitar riff at the beginning. Great hook don't hurt neither. This is an acoustic performance of the song because I can't find the studio version on youtube. 'Cop' by Alkaline Trio Alk Trio has the most plays on my last.fm and have released a ton of music. Yeah, the quality has steadily declined since their high point, their debut album, Goddamnit, and this is my favorite song from that release. Fuckin' cops. There aren't many studio versions of Alkaline Trio songs on youtube and the live videos suck too. In other words, find a better way than this to listen to the song. 'Plug in Baby' by Muse I got into a semi-serious bike accident just as this song came on, so yeah it's gonna be a song of the summer haha. I downloaded the album and this is definitely the highlight track. A bunch of boring, acoustic-y songs that I dislike....Donovan's big hit, "Mellow Yellow" sounds a lot like this too so I guess the dude's a one-trick pony. Crystal Castles-Courtship Dating Best song Crystal Castles have ever recorded. I feel like I've heard it before, when I was a kid or in a dream or something, but its really unique and catchy. The effect on the vocals is amazing, it makes Alice Glass sound like a robot feeling emotion for the first time. Sleigh Bells-Kids Its sort of clear that I really like pop songs sung by girls with a lot of effects on their voices. Of course its on the soundtrack to my summer. Its about a beach. Not a bad track on Sleigh Bell's debut album, this one was my favorite for a month and a half but it keeps switching. Beck-Fuckin' with my Head He sounds angry in a restrained way. Not like he's gonna kill her, like he'll smile a little brighter on the day that she's miserable. No idea what genre it is, which is awesome. Highlight track of the album. Sweet ass baseline.
