The only thing that surprised me about that list was that Janelle Monae's The ArchAndriod didn't make it on there. I figured out of all the albums from 2010 that I liked, that would be one I would expect to see on bigger name site's top albums of 2010. But instead I'm greeted with Ke$ha's face in the number one spot... oh well no sense in moaning about something I have no real control over.

It's actually marketed towards part-time music listeners more than (or at least just as much as) people who experiment with less popular releases. Websites like RYM and the like are a lot more tasteful, as the members there usually cross a certain border - any personal 'mildly' interested in music would like to have a website that keeps track of what they hear (last.fm), but only somebody who really enjoys it enough to get out there and try new things would go through the effort of cataloging, rating, reviewing, etc. (RYM). That'd be why last.fm's overall charts tend to suck out loud, or at least lack diversity and eclecticism.

I think that lastFM's growth in usage might be in part to blame. I believe this was done in 2009 as well as 08, and while I remember Katy Perry and Lady Gaga making them, I also remember Fleet Foxes being very high at the end of the year. Then again, I know a number of people who listen to Kesha and are otherwise well adjusted listeners.

I noticed Arcade Fire and Vampire Weekend right away. I'm still looking through the whole list. But...that's pretty disappointing that Kesha is #1, like really? That just makes me wonder how fast Justin Bieber will make it to #1

The people who do listen pop music listen to less artists total upping there plays for said artists. While us hip kids listen to a billion bands and don't agree on what's good anyway. So it makes mathematical sense. These charts are shit.

I had a discussion with a friend over whether or not mumford could make a 2010 list and I say no. We live in the internet age. If it's released anywhere then it's released everywhere.
