It is not about the person for me, but all about the voice.

This reminds me that I hate when female voices are added for a little ethereal background music in rock songs and *especially* in metal music. It drives me nuts when I see female singers in floaty dresses providing angelic background sounds in some song where the instrumentals and male voices are aggressive, hardcore metal.

Concerning the OP's question and the poll:

I definitely like some women's voices very much, but it isn't a woman's "talent" that drives my opinion. Celine Dion is capable and talented, but I dislike her voice, style of singing, and songs. I much prefer Kim Deal's warm "everywoman's" voice.

My perceptions of a singer's gender *definitely* affect my feelings about the person's voice and the song. I can tell I have a sexist response to vocalists:

(1) I notice that I pay more attention to vocals when a woman sings them.

The meaning and emotion of the words seems to get to me more. I listen more carefully to what a woman sings. I also spend more time thinking about female vocalists (and their reasons for singing) than I do about male vocalists. I simply find female vocalists to be more fascinating than male vocalists. I can remember the names of many more female vocalists than male vocalists.

(2) I think I can identify women more easily by the sound of their singing voice than I can identify men by the sound of their voices.

In other words, women's voices sound more unique to me; men's singing voices usually sound more similar, more generic. Unfortunately, I often can identify Michael Jackson's voice, because I hate it.

(3) I don't have any negative reactions when a woman's voice is lower or higher than average. Usually, I'm just impressed. However, I often hate male falsetto voices for reasons I can't quite fathom (other than I just don't like the high-pitched, thin sound).

When I hear a male vocalist singing in falsetto, I think he is trying to make me feel he is "on my side" by trying to sound more "female." I become suspicious of his intentions. Or maybe it is just simple, blatant sexism that I am experiencing: I expect a man to have a lower voice, so I feel irritated that he isn't conforming to my expectations.

(4) More songs by women annoy me because of their singing than do songs by male singers. This is because women sometimes sing with squeaky high-pitched voices, or sound as if they were little girls, or sound overly melodramatic (Celine Dion). Also, men's voices in music tend to sound more generic to me, so there is less to dislike.

I do sometimes feel women's voices can sound like a glass of cold water (splashed in my face on a freezing day ), like Duga mentioned, but luckily many women's voices feel warm to me:

I will now purge my mind of Celine Dion's syrupy sweet voice by listening to...

Daft question if you ask me. I like bands with woman in them Siouxsie and the Banshee's, Pixies, Penetration and so on. If you base your musical tastes on gender you stand to miss out on so much good stuff

It depends. Good female singers are hard to come by IMO.

Men get away with a lot more when it comes to singing music, womens vocals tend to be more trained and have great ranges and power although I think it is extremely stupid to say you dislike the voices of every female or male singer/band!! every vocal is different and you cannot possibly cast all female or male singers under a category that you dislike them.

I don't understand this question. If the musicians are competent and make good music, then I'll like them. Sex, age, etc doesn't matter.
