Theres nothing new under the sun. its a pretty easy and natural chord progression. I've heard people play things they've thought they've come up with before figuring out that it's part of another song a few times. I'm not saying they didn't steal it but if they did it was probably unintentional. a member may have heard it and let it creep into his unconscious. Plus i would have never heard of any of these songs they 'stole' from if it wasen't for this argument, these bands should be happy.

I'm sure some dead musician's estate is going to come out pretty soon with the news they are suing every single songwriter, ever, because he invented the note...

even if it was unintentional, same tempo + same progression + same phrasing (between the satriani's solo and martin's vocals) = same damn song! i mean satriani did it first, the man deserves some kickbacks or at least some credit.

I could name several hundreds of songs in my collection where artists could sue the other artist though... the line of plagiarism is indeed a blurry one, and one that is tainted with greedy artist trying to take from greedy artist and vice - versa... its messy indeed.

But like almost everything these days, there are blood sucking lawyers to take care of that.

So screwed up. And i think it pretty much hurts music as a whole,I mean, why would you bother to write something, for fear it sounds like someone elses? Then if you think your song sounds too much like another's, you'd change it, probably end up messing it up in the process.

Ugh, God I just hate human nature sometimes...

see i agree with most of that, but i don't see it applying to this situation. there is no blurry line. i mean i know hundreds of songs that use the exact same chord progressions but are completely different songs when it comes to tempo, phrasing, solos, groove, feel etc. this is black and white, the same song.

question: why are you talking about coldplay in a indie forum? For a pop band I like them. I just get sick of them if I hear to much in a day

Coldplay: I nearly liked them. So close. But their songs just don't get me interested, you know?

They lack a hook, a particularily dramatic part of the song.
