Because it doesn't spoil my enjoyment of them. And because other people are not me and obviously think differently.

I think you'll find most rational people who are not idiots would say the same thing about their favorite band.
Yeah, my favorite bands are Converge and GY!BE, I'd have to be an idiot to think everyone would enjoy those bands or to judge people negatively for disliking them.

What do you do at a party where no one likes the music you like? DEPRESSING!
Even my closest friends think I have weird taste in music so I'm used to getting stuck listening to music I don't care for. The only time it really bothers me is when I'm stuck listening to shallow rap or manufactured pop for over an hour, then I get kind of irritated.

No. Absolutely not. The most awesome dude and the biggest ******* (and everything in between and with an infinite number of world views and levels of self-awareness) can be a fan of great music. I realized this after a brief talk with a pathetic drunkard who was a big Bob Dylan fan.

Even so, at least I tend to have more in common with people who tries to dig beyond the top 40. That's something else entirely, though.

I don't think it's true to assume that who you are is based on what you listen to. The stereotypes that go along with certain genres is just ridiculous. Black metal = satanist, progressive rock = pretentious *******. It's all just a matter of opinion. There are tons of people who listen to a variety of genres and I don't think there's anyway you can judge their personality on that. Excluding a music addict obviously.

Couldn't someone who listens to a ton of different genres be someone with a very multi-layered personality or a very broad range of interests and emotional intelligence?

I'd just like to start up a discussion on whether or not you think people are what they listen to, and when a noob introduces themselves as a fan of such-and-such band, do you automatically have a feel for who this person is?
No, not from a single band. When it's a whole list of artists they like, there may be certain things I can guess about them, such as their age, but I still don't think it it tells me all that much about who they are as a person. The bigger thing, to me, isn't what they like, it's how they talk about it. That's where you can get more of a sense of the kind of person they are.

There maybe some underlying theme to music that people listen to (experimental, originality, melancholic etc) but I will play the age card and say that most people who still love music past their 30's and are open minded can't really be pigeon holed to being a particular characteristic type. Janszoon, Bob, Urban and myself all come from a Rock/Metal background in our youth but you will find us ridiculously open minded and will throw albums at you that are a complete curveball to the perception of how we look or what our favourite bands are.

So it's actually the radio station on GTA: San Andreas that causes kids to go shooting dudes?

As Janszoon stated, I think it might be clearer when a person listens to a lot of a certain genre rather than a specific artist.

When I was in high school I was known as a class nerd. People were shocked when they found I liked Nine Inch Nails and Metallica. Now, I really don't like Metallica at all, but I still like Nine Inch Nails. However, I listen to so many genres of music and such a variety of artists that I'm not sure what they would say about me. I am a little more conscious of what I listen to around some of my friends mostly because listening to something like NIN around my highly religious friend or my brother-in-law's family might be inappropriate and insensitive to them.

I'm sure a lot of people that know what I listen to might find me a bit weird and think it is fitting as either some type of music snob or the fact that I am still some type of weird nerd, but I never think about it much in terms of what people might think of me.

I just like to discover new music and need variety. I do think that my engineering and math background makes me think more technically about what I listen to, and I find that I gravitate to music that challenges me to listen to. That can mean anything from appreciating complex free-jazz (something I'm really enjoying of late) or appreciating simple international pop music (I enjoy Spanish, French, Mexican, and Icelandic folk and pop music).

The content of the music otherwise doesn't matter. I do tend to like dark music because I find it to have what I perceive to be high quality, although I am not a depressed person by any means.

Music is just a joy in many shapes and forms.

I don't think you are what you listen to, but I do think you listen to what you are.
Yes, I think judging based on music taste is just as reliable as judging based off of appearance, etc.
