I think The Monks have got to be one of those bands that when I first heard them I kinda stopped and had to double check when the album was released! I mean the organ is probably going to be forever linked to The Doors as much as it is church hymns, but The Monks used it in a way which few others, that I've found, have. And with their chanting/shouting/speaking way of singing lyrics I just feel they beat the Sex Pistols to punk by a good 10 years. I doubt they did have much influence, but I feel that a lot of what they was years ahead of other bands.
Or yaknow, Elvis, he did make rock 'n' roll sexy |

A far as Delia Derbyshire goes, what exactly should I dig around for particularly? I've seen her name float around for awhile now, so I just want to finally be able to get something from her.

Seeing as we're mentioning the BBC Radiophonic Workshop I think I should post this.
In 1972 Malcolm Clarke was commissioned to score a Doctor Who story called The Sea Devils. He ended up doing a totally experimental score on an EMS synthi 100 and amazingly the Doctor Who producers went with it. Blows my mind to think something so avant garde was broadcast on a kids TV show on prime time TV over 40 years ago.

Classical music. Stravinsky. The Rite of Spring alone set off an explosion still resonating today.
Jazz. Possibly Duke Ellington - he really did cover the waterfront. Pop - The Beatles or Elvis Presley. Rock - Jimi Hendrix Folk - Bob Dylan. A consumate and unsurpassed troubador poet. The Musical - George Gershwin. and Cole Porter |

The Beatles, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, etc., as others have already mentioned. I skimmed the first few pages of the thread and didn't see Frank Zappa's name anywhere, which surprised me. Brians Eno and Wilson come to mind as well.
