Without question I'd never say I hate all jazz because what do I know of it, but anything I've heard I have not liked. I may just be destined never to like it or understand it.
See! You like at least one jazz song.

You probably hate Mel Torme because he's kind of boring. So forget about him as a good example of vocal jazz. What do you think of someone like Louis Armstrong, who was pretty clearly a direct influence on Tom Waits' vocal style?

I would love to see you do that (the reviewing jazz part, not the sitting in the corner listening to Marillion part). If you ever decide to do it, let me know if you want some recommendations.

That just reminds me of how much I love Ella's version of "Mack the Knife".

For proggy jazz fusion, listen to birds of fire bybmahavishjun otchestra if you'ven't already. Also have a listen to john McLaughlin, al di meola, and paco de Lucia's Latin jazz work together, I'm sure that you will really appreciate the musicianship.

Just outta curiosity bud, what are your thoughts on Steely Dan and their ilk? A lot of the Westcoast L.A. rock/pop I like has jazzy inclinations here and there, so I'm curious if any of that stuff appeals to you.

I only know a little Steely Dan --- the singles --- but I like what I've heard.

In other news, I've decided to go for it and change SiaSL for 2014 from Christian Contemporary (just have to hold that little delight over till next year I guess!) to Jazz.

I'd appreciate any help as I am, as you all know, clueless in this genre. Anyone who wants to research or provide me with information will be credited in the finished article if they so desire. I'll begin sketching out details around March and hope to launch the finished article sometime around maybe July, though all this is quite fluid and could go either way.

So, any tips?

Well, there are a lot of different subgenres of jazz. A LOT. Most of the recommendations you are going to get around here from the other members is harder, 50's-60's post-bop or experimental cool jazz stuff (Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Art Blakey, etc.). If you want recommendations in jazz-fusion and contemporary jazz, I'm the guy to talk to.

My suggestion would be to build a list of albums of different jazz genres from a combination of those that have gotten a lot of critical acclaim as well as recommendations from people you trust. You can review them over time in your journal and we'll all give ya feedback of course.

I'm happy to help, but first do you have any response to my question about Louis Armstrong?
