Albums you like, by artists you don't...

are there any entire albums you enjoy by certain artists, but you have no interest in the rest of their discography? It's quite often that some group I don't like will do the occasional decent track, but I'm talking about entire albums.

here's a couple for me

Eminem - Infinite

always hated Eminem's forced angry vocals and juvenile lyrics, and commercial production. I was dismayed when 'My Name Is' turned out to not be a one hit wonder, but his massive springboard to world domination. First time I heard this album I couldn't even believe it was the same guy. The beats are in the classic mid-90s mould, and Eminem actually sounds like a real person. He's not doing the comedy Slim Shady annoying brat vocals. It may have been recoded in 1996 but Infinite is by far his most sophisticated and mature piece of work.

Stone Temple Pilots - Shangri-la Dee Da

never Exactly hated STP but they always struck me as a bit generic MYV grunge-lite. Their albums up to this point have no replay value for me at all. I thought Plush and Sex Type Thing especially were bland throwaway tunes. On this album they seemed to discover melody and songwriting, and diversity. I played this album for almost an entire summer when I first heard it, and I don't think I've heard any other of their albums more than twice.

Just one comes to mind at the moment...

Bruce Springsteen - Nebraska (1982)

I couldn't care less about anything else he's done, but for some reason "Nebraska" holds my attention from start to finish. It's the only album I've ever owned or cared to own or listen to by Bruce. I've met Springsteen fans who think it's awful and I've met people like me, who usually can't stand Springsteen, who love the album.

"Praise and blame" by Tom Jones. I've never been able to stand this
guy. His testosterone fuelled posing and preening irks me hugely. But for this record released a couple of years ago all the fake showbiz razzamatazz was stripped away to offer, on a selection of songs, a real bluesty performer tackling songs powerfully and simply.

Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion comes to mind. I liked that album, but don't really care for the rest of their stuff.

Some recommendations here that I´ll be checking out today; Shangri-la-dee-da from dca and Nebraska from Psy-Fi.

As for this, Tom Jones is treated as such a joke by so many, that I really have to listen to what he´s been up to here:-

A good album is one that you´re happy to play from start to finish without getting annoyed or bored, right ? With that definition in mind, I´d say that these artists only have one good album:-
David Bowie got it right with Hunky Dory, Zappa ditto with Hot Rats and Dire Straits with Love Over Gold.

Never liked Bruce Springsteen or Tom Jones so I will look out for those 2 albums mentioned.

meaning the only Zappa album you like is Hot Rats? Interesting..
personally I've never heard a Zappa album that didn't impress me in some way even though I wouldn't say I was a hardcore fan

I guess I´m not precisely answering your OP question, dca.
I don´t actually dislike Zappa, but after doing something great, he has a real talent for messing up an album with something trivial. I guess I used to like Overnight Sensation and Zoot Alures, but I´m not sure I´d want to listen to them now. Thanks to MB and the internet, I´m now able to find music I enjoy much more than those old albums.

Hunky Dory's the only album you like from Bowie?! Not even Scary Monsters or Station to Station or Low?

Low has a great reputation, but I´ve never really listened to it; for some reason I lost interest in Bowie when Diamond Dogs came out, and although Scary Monsters has a wonderful cover, the music just wasn´t my style. I´ve only listened to it once!
