If you read over the obscure definition I gave it states that only a few people know about it but that does not mean a mass majority knows about a indie artist like they would a mainstream artist. Yea they have their niche fan base and some don't even have that. It still does not change the fact that they are obscure to the masses.
There are independent artists that gain enough traction to be played on the radio.

Look at your boy Macklemore that had three huge hits on the radio and took home Grammys.

Yeah, and again, try and convince anybody here that Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, MBV, NMH etc are only known by a few people. It'll be funny to see you try.

You live in your own little world and you only think the things you believe are true. "All indie bands are obscure" and "Amy Winehouse is underrated" are literally idiotic sentiments and both can easily be proven wrong by anyone with a brain.

That is so true.

Now let me ask you this...

So if it is independent music that is backed by a label that is not commercial or mainstream (which can make independent artists hard to discover and less accessible to the general public) that means they are less well known than the mainstream artists. That means they are not playing on the radio, backed by the industry or commercialized so it would be harder to know about them unless you already are a fan or found out about them by researching. I am just curious as to how you personally would define that since you don't think that independent/indie music is obscure?

The dictionary definition of Obscure is "not discovered or known about;not well-known; not known to most people;likely to be understood by only a few people " so how would you define it since you disagree with the universal definition?
Do you understand that Sony, Universal and Warner are the major companies that control 88.5% of the market? It is foolish to think every single album that they own publishing rights to are not obscure to the general public. There are probably a huge percentage of albums no one has ever heard here. Being on a big label doesn't insure popularity no more than being on a indie label insures obscurity.

In 1987, M/A/A/R/S had a number one single in multiple countries with 'Pump Up The Volume'. They were signed to 4AD, an independent label, making them an indie band.

Did that make them obscure at the time?

You mean like The Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears who were at Jive Records who were an independent label till 2002?

the best places to find music on this site are the journals and plug. mainly plug since its such a rapid thing leadin to more songs bein played

i dunno about op's question tho. its hard to have a lot of obscure convo about bands on a site so broad. cause there may only be 2 or 3 ppl in that convo. with a bigger band its just easier to get a lot of ppl in the discussion due to familiarity

you can go on an emo forum or hardcore forum and find more 'obscure' stuff a lot of times but most the posters there suck anyway

so i guess im fine with the way the forum is

And I am sure that the forum is fine the way you are, although with a few exceptions.

I didn't even know who Macklemore was before the Grammys and the reason why he won all those Grammy's was for political reasons because his album was not all of that.

Janelle is not even that that indie and more commercial than Macklemore and they did not give her not ONE nomination. Her album debut at number 5 and they did not giver her one.
