Debate is fine but please tone down the personal attacks.

I brought her up as an example to illustrate a good point you made.

Just because an artist is on a mainstream label does not necessarily mean they will be mainstream or excessively commercial. In Janelle's case, she is on a mainstream label but she is not that popular. I wouldn't call her a mainstream artist just because she is on a mainstream label.

This supports the point that you made that I agreed with.

And there is so much music out there that there would be quite a few artists you didn't know, even on a big label, that would relatively be obscure to you.

I love Janelle Monae but I wouldn't call her a mainstream artist because she technically is not despite being on a mainstream label and I agree with this post.

To be fair, I don't think 'Indie music' and 'music on an independent label' mean the same thing anymore, and they haven't done in a long time.

Exactly. And the indie forum here on MB refers to indie as a vague genre of music rather than the status of whatever label the artists are on.

Exactly. A vague genre of music that doesn't tend to be in the mainstream. That seems simple, so why is everyone so angry?
