Subjective taste aside, i think the problem is not the music is the ppl.

The internet has given us a place to be opinionated about everything and usually the most controversial opinions are the ones that get all the attention and this is why ppl exaggerate their hate.

cause sure, i could be fair and say: "I personally don't like Nickelback"

But i'd rather say : "Nickelback is so awful i envy deaf ppl when i hear them"

Some ppl embrace optimism, some cynicism, and others just like to troll and get a rise out of them.
i personally try to be a balance between those and be myself and not play a character all the time and i like ppl who are that way too.

ppl who are confident in what they say but can also concede a valid point in an argument. that's the ppl i like talking too.

but i don't bother with ppl that just say things for shock effect and try to twist your every word to ridicule you.

If an artist makes music I enjoy I consider them talented. There are guitarists like Shawn Lane, Joe Satriani, and Yngwie Malmsteen who are clearly ridiculously talented at their instrument, but they all make boring and pretentious music that isn't worth my time. Since they can't do anything interesting (except for Surfing With The Alien), I see that as a big detractor from their talent.

Artists like that I think of as being well practised rather than talented.

Well no matter how much you practice, unless you have a natural talent to play the guitar, you're not going to be able to shred like Yngwie Malmsteen. I see the distinction as being two different talents: the talent to play music vs. the talent to create music.

Personally, I don't think anyone has any exceptional "talent" when it comes to playing an instrument. It all comes down to how much time you put into it. I could learn to play the guitar like Jimi Hendrix if I wanted to. But I'm not willing to invest that much time.

Boo Pet Sounds.. that's just non-sense. There are 3-4 year olds playing Beethoven flawlessly.

I agree with Batlord on the distinction between being a talented musician and a talented instrument player but the former is subjective.

Yes, and I've seen that. In fact my mom's a piano teacher. But I don't put that phenomenon down to the fact that they're talented at playing an instrument. I put it down to the fact that they're musically talented. Anyone can learn the actual mechanics of playing an instrument.
