Default Spill Your Guts About MB Members' Tastes In Music

There have been many threads about recommending other members music, and even one about rating the last poster's music taste, but it's generally kept positive and supportive. Clearly however, many people must think that "such and such"'s taste is just awful, or at least that they're falling short of their listening potential. Here is where we can really let fly and criticize our fellow members' tastes in as frank and possibly insulting a manner as we usually refrain from out of nicey nice respect.

I'd like to think that this would be less drama-prone than the other Spill Your Guts thread since it's not centered around personal attacks, but butthurt is still expected. Please don't feel obligated, however, to give compliments just to soften the blow. We're adults/young adults. So long as the person criticizing you is not being spiteful for the sake of being spiteful, I'd like responders to take guts spilled as constructive criticism regardless of how it is phrased and not act like defensive little whiny bitches. Respond with as much middle-finger-raised venom as you wish, but don't lose sight of the fact that this thread is ultimately meant to lead to constructive debate and exploring one's taste in music. So long as comments don't violate forum rules about personal attacks then anything goes.

Format will be much the same as the Spill Your Guts thread:

1.) List member(s).

2.) List grievance(s).

3.) *Optional* Suggest ways/genres/bands to fix the issue.

4.) If you're going with 3.) then I would prefer if you would give a Youtube clip or two (not more than two, cause nobody wants to listen to a wall of clips).

5.) If you're responding to a criticism, don't just bitch. Defend your taste/accept criticism intelligently, and if you're responding to someone who has posted a video/two videos for you to listen to, then you have to give it/them a shot, at least so you can say you've given their opinion some consideration before slagging them off; otherwise, keep your trap shut. Rapidfire, tit for tat posts will just make this hella boring. If it reaches that point then just take it to the regular Spill Your Guts thread.

6.) I'm instituting a three strike policy in regards to Youtube clip recs to single individuals. If your "target" has listened to your suggestions and poo pooed them, then you have only two more opportunities to win them over to your point of view with Youtube clips before it's over and done with. Just written criticisms using only 1.) and 2.) don't have a limit though. Go get that Philistine. Criticisms with video recs that are unrelated to a previous "strike out" are acceptable (e.g. telling someone they need to listen to more thrash and giving them recs after you've already failed to convince them that their taste in jazz is **** by giving them recs of "good" jazz), though use discretion as to what is and is not unrelated, and allow a certain amount of time to pass before you start throwing unrelated stuff at the same person after a strikeout (I don't know, a week or so sounds good).

7.) Yes, we all know musical taste is subjective. We're not ****ing morons. But if your response to criticism can be summed up by that "Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man" Big Lebowski meme, then I'm going to ask the mods to delete the post. It's poison to debate and just makes you look like a defensive pussy who has nothing intelligent to say. Just storm off in a huff if you have nothing better to say, cause that's basically what you're doing anyway.

Edit: 8.) Almost forgot. No posting just to tell someone they have great taste in music. This isn't a jerkfest. Any such posts I will ask the mods to remove.

I'll start off:

Wpnfire: I'm happy about your evolution in listening to the kind of extreme metal that I find to be proper, but you seem to have a youthful arrogance in brushing off large swaths of more melodic forms of metal that I'd like to think you could appreciate more if you weren't in young-guy-extreme-metal-fan mode.

Power metal might not be your thing, but I think a couple of these might bear giving an honest listen...

Spoiler for music that's better than god:
Power metal at it's most mature with some serious balls.

If you dig rawer, less pretty stuff then early Jag Panzer might be right up your alley.

Trollheart: Yeah, this guy's kind of an obvious dude to give **** to, but with your love of prog I think you neglect a lot of honestly progressive music that could be right up your alley if you weren't scared of experimental music outside of your comfort zone. There's still plenty of 70s prog and experimental stuff that I imagine you've ignored over the years just because it's not as traditionally prog as you're used to.

Spoiler for Don't be a wuss.:
Planty of krautrock qualifies as prog, and since you'll be (hopefully) covering it in your prog journal, you might as well give some a spin. And don't be a bitch and say you'll listen to it when the time comes around.

I imagine all of his stuff won't be your cup of tea, but Glenn Branca's use of experimental rock with an orchestra made up of electric guitars should be heard, and might just pique your interest. If you've any love for the weirder elements of Sonic Youth's music, then right here is where they learned everything they know. And it's entirely instrumental BTW.

Justthefacts: If you wanna dress like a hipster, then I could care less. Plenty of people who dress all sorts of ways can be just as much of a ****, or just as cool, as anyone else. I might find the whole "Fedora Fashion Fad" to be dull, but that's neither here nor there. My issue is that your musical taste seems to be painfully hipster indie. Hopefully your horizons are broadening on this site, but I can still expect to see most of what you post in Pitchfork or on Carson Daly. I'd hope that you were aware of some of the roots of alternative, but if not, then you need some education...

Spoiler for Learn from the master/journeyman.:
Some easy to listen to, but still oddball art rock/post punk/proto-punk (shut up, it makes sense). The sound of the apocalypse in slo-mo.

Some raw post-punk picking up where the Stooges left off at their most experimental.

RL Clown: I'm not entirely sure why you come to this site. You pop up every now and again to tell everyone who doesn't care that you like ICP (I do too, but there isn't really much to say about them), and talk about rap rock or whatever music I probably hate that you listen to. I really haven't seen you using this site to expand your musical horizons much if at all. I might be a bit myopic at times, but MB has still given me a lot of music I might never have listened to otherwise, and a desire to keep exploring. You need to either do the same or go post on faygoluvers.net or whatever, cause I don't see what you're getting out of this forum.

Roxy: What the **** do you even listen to? Seriously?

ladyislingering: Your obsessive talking about 70s music is kind of boring. You seem to have fetishized that annoying middle-age, classic rock fan's trope that all good music stopped when John Bonham died and that you can't spell "crap" without "rap". I've seen you talk about a select few modern groups, but I imagine either Ki pushed them on you or you just heard about them so much that you gave in to your curiosity one day when you had nothing to do but stare at your toenails. The fact that you actually do like some of these modern groups should make you reconsider your 70s elitist opinions and go forth to explore more than you seem to.

If Blind Guardian is "power metal with balls" than what is this, besides infinitely awesomer?

Why don't you edit me in to your OP there, Batlord? Lay it on heavy, hold no punches. I want to know what you really think about my musical taste, not just what you have said here or there about bands I've gushed over. I actually half expected my name up there to begin with.

I'll be contributing as well, but those I want to list, I need to study up on a bit more, and you're one of those people. The word pretentious will probably be used a lot haha.

Since you're my self-proclaimed musical mentor, add me too. Or make a new post, whatever.

Haha, will do so. I just hope everyone can roll with the punches and have fun with this. Because I really like the idea.

Ah, my post was directed at Batty. My bad, should have made that clear. But hey, if you want to spill your musical guts at me, go ahead.
