King Crimson seems to get a lot of "despite" love, but honestly don't really think theyre much better than the lot of popular-yet-disliked prog bands

gun to my head id probably take Yes over them anyway, but agree with elphenor that krautrock kicks the dick off any of the noodlers

hey I mean im pretty much unwilling to listen to Close to the Edge again; if only so that I can permanently encase my opinion that "Siberian Khatru" is, at the very least, FUN

I'm a big Yes fan, but they don't call them King Crimson for nothing.

Nah. It's because they're staunch monarchists.

I listened to a few of Elph's krautrock recs and yeah, easily defeats prog with both hands tied on its back. I can tell that with next to no knowledge of the genre of krautrock.

For me, the biggest issue with prog is that it’s often better on paper than in practice. Talented musicians playing complex, enveloping-pushing music? Sign me up! Unfortunately, a lot of it ends up being kind of meh—too staid, too attached to rock conventions, and too often saddled with lame vocals.

That said, just yesterday I gave Yes’ Fragile another listen after many years and found that I liked it a lot more than I used to. So I think I’m in a frame of mind to have my opinion changed.

I really like the Discipline-era harmonic vocals.

It'd be awesome if they actually pushed the envelope to the point of there being no prog conventions.
