K
The fact you associate "nostalgic appreciation" of something with the idea of something being "dated" is wrong. Bands like The Midnight or GUNSHIP wouldn't dominate Bandcamp unless they were able to achieve relevency for a large subset of people. The vast majority of fans of bands like that weren't even alive in the 80's.

But whatevs. Expecting nuance in these kinds of discussions is just asking to be let down.

You're telling me that music referencing a specific time in music history isn't easy to connect to styles of music from the time that it's referencing? Get out.

I'm saying you correlate the wrong things based on an outdated way of thinking. People are discovering music in ways that were unimaginable even half a decade ago. The rules of what is dated or "relevant" don't mean much in an era where somebody who is, say, 16 years old is listening unironically to Mariya Takeuchi's PLASTIC LOVE on YouTube or Spotify at the same time he's picking up a Death Grips EP.

Kinda like how you're correlating being dated with being outdated or anything negative?

Nice try, but-

It's a silly sentiment, and I went to the trouble of illustrating the reality of how people actually approach music who are younger than you and I. They don't make those kinds of distinctions. I talked to an intern's kid yesterday who is 14 and loves Whitney Houston and Gorguts. He wants to find out how to do that gated drumming thing "that Phil Collins does" because he loves that sound. Probably discovered that **** through Spotify.

A more interesting discussion would be why people who are a third my age feel nostalgic for Japanese ambient music from between 1980-89. Or perhaps why a weird flex in YouTube's algorithm catapulted an obscure japanese pop song from 1984 into millions of views, hundreds of covers, big thinkpiece responses from places like Vice, and unusually enthusiastic responses across every demographic known to man despite the fact it was a B-side footnote in it's own country of origin at the time it came out.

Someone who's heard their ideas/been uninspired by their approach before. It's neat that you found someone with diverse taste but idk what that has to do with the topic at hand.

My guess would be because they like it.

Never heard anyone use the term "synthwave" irl and only recently seen a few online use it. It has to be one of those stupid RYM made up genres. Instruments don't get to have their own wave. It's like as dumb as calling 80s dance music "snarewave" cause of the mic'd up snare drum in those recordings. Even stuff like Bruce Springsteen's Dancing in the Dark could be called "snarewave." Funk, Disco and Punk could be collectively known as "basswave" because of the prominence of bass in the mix.

Synthwave doesn't make sense cause everything from 60s Experimental to Progressive Rock to EDM uses synths ... believe it or not.

(mods: can I call something "retarded" without being censured or getting infraction? Cause that is what I want to call synthwave.)

There's plenty of thinkpieces and analyses of that stuff out there on everything under that umbrella (Outrun, synthwave, "popwave", etc.). I don't really think the terms make much sense either. But we also live in a world where djent is a thing, so there ya go.

Historically can you provide any evidence that Outrun, Synthwave, and Popwave were household names everyone used in the 80s? I could be wrong but they sound like neologism coined by some internet music hipster doofus. And if that is the case then I refuse to go along that nonsense. "Djent" is an onomatopoeia, so it makes a lot more sense than those other made-up genre names.

edit: time for me to practice some Djent on my guitar.

Depends on the music but I say a lot of the 80s still holds up.

Lucem, you're right, it's silly to talk about what I would or wouldn't do IRL. Glad you brought it up. Maybe you should write an instrumental about it. I recommend a piano paired with a clarinet. With ambient sounds of you hanging from your shower curtain you ****ing failure.
