Ok so? The Strokes have post punk similarities in their structural arrangements like The Feelies and Joseph K, off the top of my head which are just as post-punk as the bands you listed. I don't think it's outrageous to call The Strokes post-punk revival.

alright call'em what you want i still love their sound.

arguing the genre is retarded seeing as FIOE and Is This It sound like they are from 2 completely different bands. The strokes have gotten progressively worse with each album; FIOE was honestly awful apart from 3-4 songs. Someone should have told them not to mess with a good thing. They had such a unique sound when they first arrived, and now they're just, "eh." I really hope the 4th album which is set to be worked on starting this summer is a return to form for such a great and talented band. And before you start bashing me, realize that i am an absolutely huge strokes fan, and Is This It is probably my favorite album ever. So much so that i went out of my way to get the imported European version with NYC Cops on it and the cover with the naked lady lol. If you haven't listened to that album all the way through then you honestly haven't lived yet.

I like First Impressions Of Earth, although i've changed my mind over this album so many times, i have phases with it. It wasn't what anyone was expecting and kudos to them for that, change the formula a bit. They didn't with Room On Fire and it was bloody boring.

ballpeenbaby 05-19-2008 08:13 PM

Man...I forgot all about the Strokes. I've heard many rumors about them w/ attitudes. I remember they were a no-show on Jay Leno a few years back and Leno made a comment about it. From there it went down hill. The power of some people. Neat hunh.

djkikis 05-20-2008 09:26 AM

Don't diss the strokes. They're f*cking music overlords.

pheurton 05-20-2008 09:43 AM

If that was true I wouldn't have just used their vinyl's I found in the skip as toilet roll.

It is very good, but I find Is This It to be better, as does most people it seems. Check it out if you haven't heard it yet!

i do, and i personally think it doesn't get enough credit... it just didn't match Is This It? in quality, but what honestly can these days?

Laughing Boy 06-04-2008 05:32 PM

Most things.

At least 100 times better than Is This It.

I actually had an argument with this emo who insisted that Room On Fire was better than First Impressions of Earth, yet he couldn't iterate one reason why. I bought Room On Fire on vinyl hoping to get a kick out of it. It was listenable, but lacked any drive, almost keeping the formulaic nature of the first album but without the fun. Casablancas singing almost sounded like he was just trying to say the lyrics to just get the album done. First Impressions of Earth was as listenable as Is This It? mostly in that the emotion was conveyed. Really, its hard to like the Strokes when they were so glorified to fall so mightily and basically become a garden variety second tier indie band, but I can listen to First Impressions of Earth and it puts me in a good mood.

I wanted to punch said emo kid, but he was way high and may have not known what he was saying. But he really looked like he meant it and thought his opinion was OBVIOUSLY right. But I guess people get a lot of that in the whole indie hipster pretentious face-off.

My real problem with the strokes is that they never really had to work that hard coming from money, and so they never innovated their sound enough to be relevant. If they made it or not, their daddies would bail them out. They never paid their dues, and having friends who are trying to make it in the music world, I kind of want to tell them to go get on a yacht somewhere or get out there and bust your ass to make good music. Ya know, its like I love the music, but I think they are pretty fake as people. But even so, can't get over liking the music.

Piss Me Off 06-08-2008 08:09 AM

Good story! Regarding the 'emo' if i had the same attitude towards my friends musical tastes i probably wouldn't have any friends. I think there's far better reasons to punch someone than their opinions on Strokes albums but fair play i guess.
I can't say a band having money or not in the first place bothers me all that much. Is This It was a great debut, and they didn't add to their sound but then again a load of bands who are successful with their first album are guilty of this.
I have no idea what they're like as people, i'll take your word for it and say 'well thats NYC for you!'

dac 06-08-2008 08:33 AM

isn't music not supposed to be about the money though? i think by coming from money, the band was able to create that sound on "Is This It" that no one had really heard before and didn't have to focus on how well it would sell

Piss Me Off 06-08-2008 08:35 AM

There are loads of bands out there who don't really focus on how much their music would sell, and instead make fresh interesting music. Is This It was good but it wasn't anything incredibly new.

oh it wasn't his opinion. it was his arrogance with no substance. and he wasn't my friend.

the money thing doesn't bother me. but I also don't think that Is This It? has a decidedly unique sound. In fact it sounds rather borrowed. I like it nonetheless. Then again, I don't think you actually responded to my post with anything but sarcastic contempt, not recognizing the lightness with which I wrote it. Some things get lost in translation though, right?:tramp:

Ahhh i always sound sarcastic. I won't get if you write something as being 'light' though, i'll just argue with it like anything else.
But yeah, i agree with you on the borrowed thing, like i said in response to dac just now.

the_dp 06-08-2008 08:55 AM

oh I am not offended or anything, but I DO love talking music. I should have got on a music forum years ago.

Piss Me Off 06-08-2008 08:59 AM

Its a brilliant decision to make definitely! About half, probably more, of the music i've listened to over the years is due to them. You'll find so much new stuff its insane.

Whatsitoosit 06-13-2008 12:30 PM

I dig the Strokes... "You only live once" is one of my favorites. I'm a bit resentful though since Julian attended Five Towns College the same year I did... dropped out and became famous, that bastard ;)

I actually really enjoy his whole attitude with making music for the music and I think they are a rare breed in todays Rock circuit. I'm sure the best for them is yet to come... they are evolving nicely.

for anybody interested in learning more about the band there is a pretty cool video called "In Transit" on YouTube. Basically following the band around on their first tour.

lucifer_sam 07-03-2008 09:13 PM

I just discovered the song "Electricityscape" about a few days ago and it's really blown me away. I kinda wish they did more prog stuff like that, it was really good.

15Steps 07-08-2008 04:56 AM

is this it is theyre best work imo, but the vocal work on reptilia is really great.

Yukon Cornelius 01-06-2009 11:42 AM

Dont forget about the strokes...

I think alot of ppl over look them.. So many good songs.

Let me know what you think.

Janszoon 01-06-2009 11:48 AM

Their first album was really good. After that, a steady decline in quality from what I can tell.

Yukon Cornelius 01-06-2009 11:51 AM

Its just the drugs... they will come back

Sneer 01-06-2009 11:51 AM

Nice applause? I pretty much agree with Jaz, first album is excellent, second album is inconsistent, third album is poor on the whole

Lowdown 01-06-2009 08:57 PM

first only for me.

They were actually sobered up for First Impressions... I say get em back on the booze, maybe that'll get them back in shape

sweet_nothing 01-07-2009 05:33 AM

I used to really like this band now I just find them boring.

joyboyo53 01-07-2009 08:35 PM

i know im stiring up old comments, but its a forum not a chat room so bugga off!

@ sweet nothing

swim is right and they can definetly be classified as post punk revival although i agree with you, who cares what you call it?

@ the dp

the arguement that they came from money and never had to try is a ****ing joke. i loathe people who harp on people who come from money, its a form of jealousy. why discredit someone for something they couldnt control and is irrelevant to thier music?

JJJ567 01-08-2009 12:48 AM

I like them quite a bit. I've kind of grown out of listening to them for a while. Room on Fire was on regular in my freshman year of high school. I still think First Impressions of Earth is underrated. "You Only Live Once", "Electrcityscape", "Red Light", and "Ize of the World" are up there with some of their best songs.

Mojo 01-08-2009 04:24 AM

Im surprised by the comments here that described The Strokes as being original or unique.

I never saw anything unique or original to The Strokes. They always had quite a retro feel and sound to them and Is This It was very recycled in my opinion.

However, I used to love The Strokes. I was about 17 at the time and Is This It got played every day, several times a day for about 6 months. I still love that record when I put it on from time to time.

They are unoriginal and even quite lazy in their approach and their albums that followed were not up to scratch (although they werent terrible) but I still have time for them. I'm probably just a little bored by them now.

scottsy 01-10-2009 12:28 AM

I dunno, the whole punk / retro thing feels likes its already over before it began - it never really seemed like a trend that had a whole lot of momentum, and got old rather fast...

insinkerator 01-22-2009 06:14 AM

i am hoping against hope that the strokes get announced for some festival or any gig for that matter. I am itching to see them live.
