yea i don't doubt that some of the reporting is a bit sketchy at this point, but i'm also pretty optimistic that there was a large cohort of hardcore radiohead/music fans who have strong principles and didn't mind paying 10-20 pounds for the download. as a student i find it hard to believe that so many did in fact pay more than 0-1 pound for it, but hey, that's just the ignorant inner-student instinct comin out

and hey, what's the deal with yous guys paying nothing for it? i can understand downloading countless cd's off torrent sites, cuz a) cd's are expensive and b) the money hardly goes to the band anyway. but in this case, virtually all the money off sales is going right to radiohead, so why not toss em a buck or two? i know theyre already rich biatches lol but it's the principle of the thing

I don't think the size of Radiohead's fanbase is really the issue. I just think bands need to be more forward thinking.

If a band were to , for example put up on their own websites maybe a few good quality live shows & various rarities available to download with an option to donate i'd happily send them a few quid for making the effort. It's money they wouldn't normally get & they'd probably see a bigger share than what they would have got had I bought an album.

i'm in 100% agreeance with that post, i definitely think that less established bands could benefit from this approach. most likely a lesser known band will have a loyal following who, if respectful, will gladly donate what they can afford for an album, video, or rarities.

if anything, i think less established bands could benefit MORE than established ones, financially at least. as hard as it is to get ppl to go out and buy albums nowadays, it's even harder for bands to generate some income since money from sales hardly gets to them anyway. i think underground bands will see less pirating of their music and more donations, while bigger bands might not see as many donations, and probably still a high degree of pirating due to their popularity.

its an ingenious notion. Theyre going to make so much more money getting £3 for a download then they would buy selling cds for £12. Due to the amount of downloads already (1.2 million was the last i heard) even if each person only pays 10 pence, the band will still pocket 120,000 eachIts a rational trait of human beings to go for the best possible quality for the cheapest rate and thats exactly what radiohead have played upon. Whether or not they dont care about the money, they know there are many fans out there who are going to pay a sum out of respect and gratitude.

Furthermore, its widened their fanbase enormously i'd imagine. News coverage alone has created curiosity, of course people are going to legally download an album for free legally by one of the most lauded bands on the planet, so potentially the band is gathering a much bigger fanbase with the possibility of more previous albums being bought.
