Naming your band after an awesome song by Leonard Cohen is far from awful in my book.

I don't really like band names that come from songs, it's not very original.

Sisters of Mercy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As far as I understand, this is where the name came from and it really doesn't have anything to do directly with the Leonard Cohen song.

I didn't include the two I voted off in the list (NC&tBS adn SP) because I didn't want to confuse why I include them when I voted them off... so anyway, with voting starting now... and with Will's ok this is the list:

I may have killed this thread by waiting so long, but The Cult & the Pogues are out. Two of my all time favourite bands rubbed out in a blink of an eye... but that's how these things go sometime.

1. Bauhaus
2. Birthday Party
3. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
4. Chameleons UK
5. Cocteau Twins
6. The Cure
7. The Cramps
8. Dead can Dance
9. The Dead Milkmen
10. Echo & the Bunnymen
11. Gang of Four
12. The Jesus and Mary Chain
13. Joy Division
14. Killing Joke
15. Ministry
16. Mission of Burma
17. Pixies
18. Public Image
19. Sisters of Mercy
20. Siouxie and the Banshees
21. Skinny Puppy
22. The Smiths
23. Sonic Youth
24. Violent Femmes

As the list has grown to more than twenty, and I don't have a handle on how many are playing yet, you can toss out 4 bands until we get down to 20. so...

Birthday Party,
Cocteau Twins,
Gang of Four,
Mission of Burma

Polls close Sunday, provided there are at least 5 votes

The link you provided contains a link to the band's page which says this:

Quote:
The name was influenced by Robert Altman's film McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971), which featured the Leonard Cohen song "Sisters of Mercy" (from the album Songs of Leonard Cohen) ("because [calling ourselves] The Captains of Industry wouldn't have been as funny").
So there.
