I haven't heard of Dan Petrucci, is he the brother of John Petrucci of Dream Theater?

Not sure if I can agree with "I can't stand anything [he] plays... but... I respect his talent." I understand some guitar players are deemed as talented in the public eye or by critics, but I don't feel I have to agree if I don't see them live up to it, or if I don't hear anything talented coming from them.

All in all I think we are almost on the same page. There are bands I don't like at all but I'll still admire the talents of the guitar player in those bands, and I'll even watch a doc to hear him talk about guitar and junk, even though I won't go out of my way and buy an album from that band. Kirk Hammett for instance, while Metallica isn't a band I am crazy for, what I do see Kirk play I have no complaints. I'm sure there are someone somewhere who doesn't like him. But what I hear Kirk do I like and he earned my admiration for his talent and other reasons, and John Mayer didn't.

Why do you guys dislike him as a person? Every time I have seen an interview he has been level headed and modest. He was even on the Chapelle show in a pretty funny skit.

Lol @ Jans comment. Are you impling he's an ass Jans?
I think sometimes its easy to let dislike cloud your judgment out of spite. I sometimes have to remind myself not to do this. This also relates to a lot of things not just musicians. Personaly it can get amusing to watch sometimes and I can speak from experience that this is true. I have a lot of people who the only reason they want me to come over is for me to play guitar and sing for them. (not bragging just making a point) every now and again I end up somewhere where there are a couple or few people in the crowd who just despise me but at the same time have told me they like my music. Some just refuse, but the expression on those peoples faces after I play and the silence from those few is all the confirmation I need from them. If anything it speaks more loudly than spoken compliments sometimes do. Point is, likability doesn't equal capability in any aspect of life and should not compromise ones better rational judment. Fact is though that it does and always will but it doesn't change anything. I like a lot of pro athletes simply because a lot of people hate them. At the end of the day it doesn't change or take away from how good they are. They know their good and popularity or worrying to much about what people think about you doesn't win you games. Talent does and thats really all that matters imo. I think if Hendrix was a complete and total ass it wouldn't change me being as big of fan of his one bit. SRV was a really good nice humble guy as well along with a lot of other musicians I like but if they were dicks I wouldn't care. I'd probaly like them more actually other simply because a of that fact. Not to say that being likable and nice isn't a good quality cause it is but it doesn't inhance or increase your talent or capability. Just means you can actually have less of it and more people appreciate it just because your such a nice guy/girl whatever. I actually think John Mayers a pretty nice guy from what I've seen but its not like I really know anything about him other than he can play the hell out of a guitar.

I don't know how many times I've heard someone say at work through the years about someone else..."man that dudes a dick!" Followed by someone else saying.."yeah but he does know his ****" .....then it never fails the next response to that is..."yeah he does...but he's still a dick". Thats usually when I start I laughing.

I wonder how much our opinions and stories of actual famous musicians are accurate. I would guess not that much.

What if Hendrix was a complete turd, and SRV was the biggest cvnt in history!?
