Empty Castles by Spectral (Rempis/Johnston/Ochs)

https://aerophonicrecords.bandcamp.c.../empty-castles

Quote:
Empty Castles presents a new challenge and is another instance of how an acoustic can shape performance. It was recorded in Magazine A-168, a 12,000-square foot concrete shell at Mare Island in Vallejo, California, originally a naval munitions bunker dating back to WWII. The vast structure magnifies everything and produces a stark reverberation, an echo almost as palpable as the scaled-up instruments themselves, resulting in the anomaly of a large space sounding positively claustrophobic. As the liner notes succinctly put it: “There was nowhere to hide during this recording session, every note staring back at its creators with fearless eyes”. But if the prospect of three improvisors being scrutinised by their phantom reflections for just over fifty minutes sounds constricting, think again.
The Free Jazz Collective: Spectral – Empty Castles (Aerophonic, 2018) ****

Highly recommended

Dell Brecht Lillinger Westergaard (DBLW) - Boulez Materialism

The Free Jazz Collective: Dell Brecht Lillinger Westergaard (DBLW) - Boulez Materialism (Plaist/Soulfood, 2018) ****½

Quote:
Boulez Materialism is the orchestration of sound movements, interconnecting the hybrid structure of acoustic music with live electronics resulting in an effect as if you were listening to a chamber orchestra
Fans of avant garde electro-acoustic music (especially the pioneers) and free jazz should most definitely check this out. Also flirts with modal jazz. This is a contender for a top ten 2018 spot and this is turning out to be a phenomenal year for free jazz. The competition for an AOTY spot is going to be super tight.

Alive in the East?
Album by Binker & Moses

released June 22, 2018

Binker Golding (Tenor Sax)
Moses Boyd (Drums)

Also features:
Yussef Dayes (Drums)
Tori Handsley (Harp)
Evan Parker (Tenor and Soprano Sax)
Byron Wallen (Trumpet)

Firey “semi-free” groove jazz. Better than Medeski Martin & Wood and I’m not throwing that out there lightly. 5/5. If you’re not a fan you might as well jump on because this is going to make big waves

https://binkerandmoses.bandcamp.com/...ve-in-the-east

Also available on Spotify

Didn't know that Parker was on that. Solid record, checked it out a couple of days ago and forgot to post it in here.
