schnell live at sowieso

self-described as accelerated bebop you can easily hear the bebop themes broken into brief fragments and looped frantically with extreme free jazz aggression

the musicianship on this is jaw dropping but more importantly it’s perfectly musically effective

bombastic exciting traditional and unique

5/5

someone is getting bumped out of my top ten AOTY cause this will not be denied

Hey Occult, last year I saw this band at a local record shop called TMT Trio. I went with my family cause the drummer's my mum's neighbor in Ohio. I started out interested but got thoroughly bored towards the second half of the performance. Maybe this is something you'd be into, though? Here's the show I was at:

Lives by Michael Foster / Ben Bennett

Michael Foster ear f ucks the listener here. It sounds like he’s playing the sax - think of the force of the post Coltrane heavies while also eating Doritos and sucking dick at the same time. I assume you’re already listening.

Still enjoying this. Recorded in 2015 and 2016, but released this year.

How Many Bubbles Are In A Bar Of Soap? by New Atlantis Duo

Impressive resumes on these two. Late Coltrane inspired free jazz played very well.

The Free Jazz Collective: Norbert Rodenkirchen / Robbie Lee / James Ilgenfritz - Opalescence (Telegraph Harp, 2018) ****

Norbert Rodenkirchen / Robbie Lee / James Ilgenfritz - Opalescence

I don’t always dick ride this blog but:

Quote:

Opalescence, the debut album of this unconventional trio, features many exotic and strange instruments, all are played in fresh and bold manners. Rodenkirchen plays medieval flutes, baroque flute, Beaudin modern traverso and piccolo, Lee plays the giant contrabass recorder, chalumeau, gemshorn, sopranino saxophone, Beaudin and medieval flutes, glissando Kingma-system quarter-tone flute, F flute and Ilgenfritz focuses on arco playing on the double bass.

...

The rich, idiosyncratic vocabularies of these resourceful musicians is informed, naturally, by medieval music and folk traditions but navigates freely with references to French renaissance composer Josquin, to contemporary music - especially the spectral composers Giacinto Scelsi, Iannis Xenakis and Gérard Grisey, and obviously modern jazz, reminding us that Roscoe Mitchell already include the baroque flute in his arsenal of instruments.

Lao Dan - Functioning Anomie

Quote:
Natural cave reverb attack!!
Chinese free improvisation saxophonist / flutist 老丹 Lao Dan's first solo album.

These recordings are from Qinglongdong Tunnel in Hangzhou, China. All natural cave reverb, the free improvisation of his alto saxophone, the sound of the passengers and the cars were recorded, as every functioning individual.

"Lao Dan is a monster improviser. I'd never heard of him and I was completely swept away by his powerful playing and concept."

"I have this feeling Lao is a soldier that cannot be silenced."
