I'm with Trollheart though when I say I will never, ever, ever wear headphones outside. I'm not a douchebag and/or anywhere near cool enough to pull it off.

EDIT: While jogging - OK, I get that one. That one makes sense. I don't jog though, so that aint an issue for me.
A pair of clip-on earphones are far more convenient for jogging than headphones, I have a cheap pair especially for that purpose. I never wear headphones outside, if I'm taking music with me somewhere I bring my good earphones. Not only are they less hassle but you won't be annoying other people by blasting music through your headphones.

I just don't see how people can go about their daily lives with any focus and alertness while listening to music on headphones, unless they just wander aimlessly about, being aloof and with no particular purpose or goal.

If I see a person walking down the street with headphones on, I wonder how long it will be until they're hit by a car. Must be listening to something really monumental and important.

I have a pair of v6's, which keep in the sound, and I make sure to keep my music at a level where I know other people won't hear it, especially in quiet places. The only downside is people trying to talk to you, which seems a bit pointless when you're wearing things over your ears. I never understood why people engage in small talk when I'm either reading, or listening to music, but when I'm not invested in anything people don't even glance my way.

Maybe they are listening to a motivational speech to help them get through their day. I don't think listening to music while walking down the street is as bad as texting while walking down the street.

Except at least the person texting will hear the bang and screech of tires as the person that was driving and texting suddenly looks up and is barreling over the sidewalk and heading in his direction...

Unlike texting, you still are able to use your eyes and look both ways when crossing the road.

I have headphones on a lot. Especially at school, if I'm studying. I also noticed a great thing about wearing headphones - people don't randomly come up to me and bother me. The worst thing about being at school is that people would randomly walk up to you, while you're clearly busy reading a textbook or on the computer, and basically try to recruit you for their club or get money from you for a fundraiser.

Music also helps me focus in places like the library, where it's just uncomfortably quiet and people are walking by all the time.

Unlike aliens, we can only see in one direction when we're just walking forward, unless we decide to alternate between looking forward then backward constantly while walking.

I'm not saying either is better than the other. I'm saying it's pretty likely that people who feel the need to be focused on anything else but navigating the world they share with equally inattentive individuals driving 4,000 pound objects at high rates of speed are not doing their odds any favors.

Listening to music in headphones all the time is a great way to cut yourself off from the world around you and avoid interacting with it. Check.

SORT of tying into what Freebase is saying, but going off on a slight tangent, it bugs the hell out of me when I ring the bell on the bus, go up to the front door standing beside the driver (headphones on or not, makes no difference --- earbuds in I mean) and they'll go by my stop!

Me: "WTF?? I wanted to get off there!"
Driver: "Should have rung the bell."
Me: "I DID."
Driver: "Nah. Didn't hear it."

Usually, the next stop is like five minutes' drive away, so a long walk back. But what freaks the hell out of me is WHAT THE HELL DOES HE THINK I WAS STANDING THERE FOR, THE ****ING COMPANY??? I mean, bit of logic here please! It's just a way for someone to assert their pathetic bit of control over you: oh I'll just fly past the stop, he can't say anything to me. ****ers.
