I see where you're coming from. I applaud you for wanting to get out into the world and do more with yourself. A lot of people don't do that, so it's nice to see it.

It's weird though because although my parents were so good with money as I grew up, I sort of took the opposite route and was never really too careful with my money because even though I pay bills and rent, I still manage to make enough money to live comfortably. And I make a little over minimum wage. I might just be talking about nothing now. I just think that with people who both don't make a lot, and don't have a lot of money, shouldn't necessarily be considered poor if they've been able to purchase things that give them a comfortable life, be it an apartment, television, computer, etc.
The way I see it is:

Poverty= Not having the basics or means to get them
Poor= Able to have the bare minimum basics, perhaps a few nicer things with investment.

I could go on but I don't see a reason to.

I have a temper and shouldn't always be taken entirely seriously. Still, if hating people for treating me like the help and preferring the company of those who understand that feeling or make an effort not to be oppressive in that way makes me prejudiced so be it I guess. I should elaborate and say that I've met plenty of well-off people who are very well-mannered and appreciative. But, in my experience, that's simply not the case with the majority of the people I'm dealing with.

I guess that's a pretty valid criticism though. It's pretty biased to sympathize with the perhaps unsavory characters of the underworld and not with the uppity snooters. I suppose someone who grows up pampered and around people who treat the less fortunate poorly is pretty likely to adopt the same mentality.

Those aren't terrible definitions. And just bare in mind that I'm just enjoying the discussion we're having because I find it interesting. I still think that the term "poor" can be misleading in so many different ways. If I were to have it my way, I would probably put your definition as an official definition of the word because it's exactly what i've been getting at. The common misconception is that people think the word "poor" means you're basically homeless.

then again you can justify racism, xenophobia and bigotry in general by appealing to human nature as well. you can probably even justify psychopathic behavior in this way. so at the end of the day i don't think you need to be apologetic for disliking people you find unpleasant.

Yeah, the words 'poor' and 'poverty' definitely take on different meanings to different people. Homelessness is so tricky because there are sooooooooooo many factors that go into it besides class.

@JWB I was thinking about that too but couldn't put the thoughts to words.

I'll be honest. I kind of regret bringing up homelessness since a lot of homeless people that I meet around where I live are some of the coolest people on earth.

imo the proper terminology should be

poor/working class people = peasants
homeless people = gypsies

Yeah... I mean there are those voluntarily homeless drifter/bohemian types for sure. But like Ki said there's also just a lot of really ****ed up people (be it from drugs, disabilities, etc) who can't take care of themselves and don't know how to get help.

yea, that's the only kind i've ever met tbh. i've never met a voluntary homeless person in my life. my dad was in the sobriety program himself, so he knew a lot of them.

I imagine that's probably a San Fransisco thing.
