call me old fashioned, but i just dont get the whole 'body modification' idea. someone above posted that you should never do it to conform to a stereotype, but then goes on to say how they got theirs done because '(they) feel its who (they) are'. who you are? hanging metal in holes you punctured in your face is who you are? i dont really follow that logic. i dont see how it isnt following a trend, because its definetly not original. although i am not particularly fond of piercings, most of them can be removed without much permanent damage, and so it makes a little more sense to me than tattoos. on the other hand, i actaully think some tattoos are really neat. some of them are very artistic and beautiful, but again i dont really get it. i read somewhere that roughly 50% of people eventually regret getting a tattoo. unlike a piercing which can just be removed, tattoos are very expensive to get removed and never completely go away. not to mention if you get it somewhere visible you are delibrately pigeon-toeing yourself out of a lot of job opportunities. now, thats not exactly right on the employers part, but its just the way it is. it seems like a thoughtless decision most people make, and i just dont see any real benefit. another thing i dont fully understand is tattoos 'for meaning'. now obviously i think its a much better reason to get a tattoo than 'because it looks ****in sweet', but i still dont follow. are you going to forget what that tattoo represents if you dont paint it on your body? i feel like more often than not people just do it so that people will ask them 'whats that for', they can respond with some 'deep sentimental attachment' to some worthy subject?

now please dont misunderstand me, i am not out to judge people who make different lifestyle choices than me. i am not trying to poke fun, or say that it is 'pointless'. if you like ink and metal, more power to ya. i have just never fully understood the appeal personally, and maybe someone can help me understand.

well that would make sense. based on the locations of some piercings, i believe it was created with the idea of pain in mind.

It is a very unique pain, something you can't experience any other way. After awhile it starts to feel good, well one certain areas. I am looking forward to my neck piece getting filled in, but I am not looking forward to that pain again, the outline was bad enough, but filling it in is gonna be the most painful thing.

I wouldn't go as far as to say my body is a temple or a canvas, but I do appreciate good body art. I agree that it seems as though most people do it nowadays to meet the trend and regret it later. I see so many tattoos around here that are just ****in' ridiculous. Then there are those that are phenomenal. I'd certainly like to see your finished tree piece on your back, EDGE. Have you seen The Fountain? I'm pretty sure there's a woman on there with a realllly nice back piece of a tree. I think its getting really popular now, but still ****ing sexy. I've toyed with that idea many times, but I feel like it just wouldn't be right without really detailed roots. Also, I've toyed with the idea of Gaia by Alex Grey on my back but that would be extremely overdoing it, I think. I've no tats at the moment, but did get one drawn for me, waiting to be done. It's the double helix DNA to form the infinity sign. And no, it won't be a tramp stamp. I'm thinking either wrist, neck or between the shoulder blades. Any thoughts? Then, I got the ears and nips done.

I plan to travel and prehaps get a tattoo of something that I find absolutely incredible and spiritually significant. Prehaps not.

Well both male and female 'downstairs' piercings are for stimulation as are female tongue piercings but I think many people don't realise that this is what they were originally intended for.

As for tattoos I agree. Generic butterfly etc designs are kinda lame.
