I got a new cast iron skillet, so I broke it in with a filet mignon. I'll have to adjust for next time since I got it a little too hot, but holy **** that was that good. Seared in oil, then garlic, butter, and thyme added to the skillet and popped in a 450 degree over for a few minutes. Served up with saute'ed garlic and mushrooms, a baked potato with butter, sour cream, bacon and chives, and since they didn't have any ****ing lettuce at the store, I settled for asparagus with a fresh lemon wedge squeeze and pepper.

I'm finishing it all off with a piece of leftover homemade Pumpkin Pie.

Let the food coma commence. Oy.

I bet you're the most fun at Thanksgiving.

The TG food was incredible, but yeah. I'd much rather have that.

Looks legit! I'm in the market for a cast iron skillet. I saw some in the camping section at Walmart that were just a fraction of the price of the ones in the kitchen section. I'm wondering what the catch is. Like, do I need to season them extra, or are they just pieces of sh!t? I mean, cast iron is cast iron, right?

I got it as a late bday gift yesterday, since the fam finally all got together. This one here:

Not sure about the Walmart ones, but this one comes pre-oiled up and ready to go. I just had to rinse and wipe it. When it comes to cookware, you're better off paying a little extra so it'll last longer, since there a lot of ways to cheapen up metals/iron, and heat is always a factor in it's shelf life.

I've given a bunch as gifts. I usually spend around $35 - $50 USD on them. The ones that I saw in the camping section at Walmart were around $7 - 12, which is WAY lower, and made me cautious. They felt rough inside, which leads me to believe that they haven't been oiled / seasoned.

The catch is that they are heavier and harder to clean then norma skillets (such as ceramic). But you get a muuuuch better sear on your meat with cast iron, they pretty-much last forever, and it won't warp. You also should oil it after using it ("season") to keep it in good condition.

I got mine from the second - hand store as I don't see much difference in buying them new or used. And they work a treat.

I have a larger cast iron pot that I got secondhand from my mom. She had no idea how to use cast iron and used soap on it, which caused rust.
