I wonder what the automatic thought to pop into people's heads was (peoples' heads was? People's heads were? Peoples' heads were? **** this thread.). Colons are much rarer in the english language than commas so I automatically thought of the first option, but maybe that's just because I'm looking at it from a male point of view.
