it's pretty much nailed on the head here. Apart from the few people that take it upon themselves to just be ****s to new members, I think places like Redditt and FourChan have killed the smaller forums like this.

But I don't think the forum has been as quiet recently, as you're saying Vanilla. And I do agree that if it has, summer is a big contributing factor.
Every forum I've been on has threads like this at least twice a year without fail, the forum is dying, the place isn't as good as it used to be and nobody discusses the main subject the forum was built around anymore. They attempt to encourage dicussion by creating threads and 1-2 weeks later everyone is back to talking about sex again. I suspect it's down to the tight knit groups that inevitably form, older members get bored, they move on or life gets in the way, the community shifts a little and those that are left are feeling a little lost among new faces. It's not the forums dying, it's your little cliques slowly eroding away.

That's certainly partly true. But this place literally, numerically has less active posters than it used to as well.

technically Music Banter has over 86000 members. Take maybe half of them, even two thirds as troll/spam/zombie accounts.
That's still a lot of missing posters.

Do you have access to activity stats? # of new members, # of members that havent been on in X days, etc?

Seeing a rolling chart of total active members would actually be pretty cool

There hasn't been a lot of really controversial threads/posts in the lounge lately so there's that. Seems like most people here are pretty like-minded so without the trolls there's not a whole lot to argue about.

Far as the music portions go, idk. There's always a lot of people viewing the Rock/Metal and Rap/HipHop subforums but not so much on the others. The Emo Album Club, even though no one's really participating, was a really cool idea that I think could be implemented for other genres.

I think the weekly member mixtape, and threads like it, need to be revived. Totally agree with WD.

Personally, I'm reviving the metal wars thread as we speak. We need daily/weekly music related games! Newcomers want to participate in that kind of thing. If they come here, see those threads dead and the 'Your Day' thread bumpin like it always is, they lose interest real fast. And so do a lot of us regulars.

It doesn't work if no one is participating or even showing interest.

Same goes for the things that Carpe mentioned.

I agree with most statements, it's important for members to participate and feel committed to keep a discussion going.
My intention is not to criticize badly but at times I get the feeling that a bunch of gifs posted in no relation to the original idea of the thread kinda makes it end.
Personally, I have been absent for a long time too, which I regret. I am suffering badly from the heat and my laptop seemed to break down. Hopefully these days are over now.
I guess at times everybody needs a pause to reorientate and most use the summers for this. Don't worry too much, MusicBanter will be sure more active within some time!

I've seen this happen on other forums where more of the regular members lose interest after a while and slowly stop being active. It's not a surprise.

Have to admit my motivation to post here has slowly dwindled in the last 6 months. I hardly post in the music areas anymore, but that's mostly because I haven't been listening to much music lately..

My tolerance for the amount of complaining about other people here though is evaporating, and some of the more judgmental posts are really coming off as repulsive.

I agree with this.

I don't think people have a good outlook of the forum any more. It's lost its spark for some and people either don't care or are too busy to care. However, there are members who work long hours and still fit in time to post on here. I've been here nearly 9 years and I know when it's quiet and when it's unusually quiet. Oh well, it is what it is. I just miss some people that's all. Especially Richard and Tumor.
