$660,000,000. Which, if you distribute among six billion people would equal... eleven cents. Redistribute that wealth, baby.

Exactomundo.

There's 8,766 hours in a year. 1 / 8,766 = 0.0001

So instead of a person using 100% of power for the year that one hour off means they're only using 99.989%

Well, if you're gonna start donating to charity then you might as well commit to more than just $50 just the one time. And global warming is a problem that isn't going to be affected by the equivalent of $50, whereas you can actually feed a few homeless people for that much.

my point is that accumulation matters more than the individual contribution

With money, yes.

This whole Earth Hour thing is just touchy, feely BS for the tree huggers.

But you're not accumulating ****. You're not even really encouraging anyone who isn't already concerned with the issue to do anything about it. Education and public discourse are hopefully going to accomplish something, not symbolic crap like this that the global warming deniers are just going to laugh off as hippy, pinko self-indulgence. By all means, go ahead and make yourself feel like an activist. I'm sure it'll be just as useful as Kony 2012.

I always thought of Earth Hour as more of an awareness thing really, and kind of an example of what people can do if they work together. Just a very ineffective one. Like International Women's Day or Black History Month. At least it's only an hour. Some people just try to make too big of a deal out of it like with many things.
