Sigh. I just really cannot be arsed.

On the plus side... Over a week since I gave up smoking. I had a bit of a fail Tuesday, but I'm back on track now. Still no alcohol and no caffiene after midday (having lived on Coke and Tea for 10 years, the blinding withdrawl headaches were a bit too much - I've comprimised with myself ). I haven't felt this healthy in 10 years!!
I'm two days away from completing my two months of not smoking. I've also taken my diet seriously and removed soda and beer almost completely. I love the fact that I can run much longer without gasping for air. Keep it up.

Weirdly enough, I managed to keep myself fit even on 20 a day - I was easily able to do my 4 mile runs each morning. It's bloody arthritis, not smoking that's cut them down! But good for you - it's sucky giving up vices but in the long term it's worthwhile, as you've proven. Probably, because I did keep myself fairly fit and healthy (ate properly, lots of water in amongst my tea and coke, excercising, etc) the smoking never figured to be that much of a bother. Now I actually have a reason, so it's a lot easier to keep with it. Plus it's pretty nice not to wake up in the morning feeling like I've eaten an ashtray!

I've always wondered if people who smoke lose the ability to smell the noxiousness of cigarette smoke. So I'm interested to hear that the taste wasn't appealing to you. I really dislike the smell of cigarette smoke and can't imagine ever even wanting to begin to smoke given the smell. What made you start smoking to begin with?

A good thing about quitting smoking is that your lung cancer risk drops quite a bit almost to normal fairly quickly (perhaps within 5 years), I've read.

Quote:
Cancer Risk: Understanding the Puzzle

Quitting smoking will greatly reduce your risk of developing lung cancer. About 10 years after quitting, an ex-smoker’s risk of dying from lung cancer is 30 to 50 percent less than the risk of those who continue to smoke.

Quitting smoking will benefit you at any age. Some older adults may not believe there is a benefit in quitting smoking. In fact, there are many benefits.

If you quit smoking, you also reduce your risk for cancer of the esophagus, larynx, kidney, pancreas, and cervix as well as your risk for chronic lung disease and heart disease.

I have no idea frankly! My parents have always smoked, so the smell of cigarettes wasn't something that ever bothered me. So I guess, seeing as it never bothered me I must have thought I'll gve it a go, see what all the fuss is. After only a couple of cigarettes you get used to it. It's not so much that the taste isn't appealing, it's the fact that you don't really notice it so much until it's gone, if that makes sense.

I started when I was 14, on and off. It wasn't til I was 16 and started doing my exams at school that I found a smoke calmed me down somewhat... And it went from there....

That makes sense. Thanks for answering. I never grew up around smoke. When I was a child with my smoking grandma in her car (TORTURE!!!), I'd have the window cracked and would be gasping for fresh air from outside.

I didn't like my grandma much.

Same for my Gran. Her make-up always had a smell to it when she had just applied it, and cigarette smoke!

A couple of months ago two children tragically died in their home due to a gas leak. The leak took place over about two days, with the family getting sicker and sicker before the two children passed away before being taken to a doctor/hospital. Both parents were smokers, and there was a lot of discussion about how the parents may not have smelt the leak because a lot of smokers' sense of smell greatly diminishes after being a smoker for an extended period of time.

What? Just because people smoke doesn't mean that you can't smell gas! That's one of the most absurd things I have ever heard. Of course the sense of smell is diminished by smoking but you aren't completely numbed by it and gas has it's own particular odour that is immediately noticeable even if you are blind drunk! Carbon Monoxide poisoning is a different matter altogether as it's virtually odourless but if it was pure gas then that is an outrageous statement.

Was it pure gas or Carbon Monoxide? if it was the latter then no one is at fault apart from the engineers or manufacturers of the appliances.
