I'm very familiar with and often impressed by various leftist analyses (and some right wing ones too). But between that and adopting the identity of a "leftist" there's a yawning chasm, which I don't remember crossing.

Why would I be a "disappointed leftist" if I've never bought in into Marxist teleology, for instance? My thing is to try to think critically and being a "leftist" seems like the opposite of that. Needing for some reason to show "solidarity" with a TV-addled uncle cause he's picking up some of the correct buzzwords? Yeah, sounds about "leftist".

Gentle ribbing is practiced by friends. You are not my friend, nor will you ever be. You seem, for whatever reason (probably a valid one, says everyone here) to have taken an instant dislike to me, but I've had fights with the greats: Frownland, YorkeDaddy, OH... you ain't in the same league, son.

And TV-addled? How dare you say ... sorry, have to go watch TV.

I do know that Troll has historically been vulnerable to personal attacks here, a couple that were way more personal than this to be fair to Jadis. Does he(Trollheart) show a little naivete when looking at American issues? Being an American myself (and just bordering the south), I'd have to say, yes. He may have seen George Floyd on TV in Ireland, but here, we're actually living it. And you can see the lines being drawn right in front of you.

But I also know him to be very well meaning. He's trying to understand what makes us Americans tick and why we have this inner need to hate. It isn't uniquely American, of course, and it isn't even uniquely white; we all have the ability to irrationally hate.

Anyway, I'm not sure who is a lefty or a righty (safe to say Anteater would be a Republican or Tory though?), and maybe it doesn't matter.

I'm just an ignorant Irish guy trying to educate myself. Heinous crime, I know.

FYI, for those who care, I don't watch CNN. I watched it during the run-up to the election, through it and into the insurrection, but only because it was the only US News channel we can get. My news normally comes from our own national TV station, RTE, also BBC and SKY. Oh, and goes without saying I slavishly watch the most trusted name in news, Kermit the Frog's Muppet News.

An ex of mine is from Bogotá and a few of my old pals were from Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali. I could dust-off my old address book and see if I still have any of those connections in that part of the world.
