I mean do they just wait twenty seconds and say "Hewo, I'm deaf and my woommates are making to much noise, pwease send a patwol car. If you can hear me scweam woud enough so I can feel the vibwation in my phone."

That justification is iffy. That comparison must offend Blind ppl, I just think it hasnt caught up yet. The thing that ****s me up is that we need these comparisons, its natural to equate a mistake to a defiency. However, alot of the common expressions we use take things to an extreme, for exmpl, lets say someone doesnt hear what you say, why say "what are you, deaf?" Instead of "can you not hear well?"
Why hold on to a term or expression that our progressive society is trying to weed out cus its hurtful?

I dont like the idea of policing language but above my own comfort there are sone terms or words that could be reformed because they set the tone for conversations. Mind you we'll all end pansies talking like our therapist wants us to talk, talking about "well i feel that your words are not taking into consideration my feelings" but isnt that the whole point? That our societly should aspire to that lvl of sophistication and civility?

Yeah see this sentiment doesn't really go anywhere with the general public tbh. Progressives debating what should or should not be protected just kind of feels to Joe Sixpack like deciding what movie to go see when there isn't really much out worth seeing. Black people and gay people had a history of terrible things that were hard to ignore to make people squirm and also a dedicated, politically active advocacy culture that literally marched in the streets to force people to be aware. This is why people still say "midget" and "retard".

It’s amazing how people will bend over backward to justify using hate speech instead of just admitting they’ve been wrong for using a certain word a making a correction to better themselves. The r-word is an ugly hateful word and everyone knows it.

Right, i agree with that. Some words are definitely more hurtful than others but retard has been used as a humilliating word to ridicule and bully handicapped kids as well as humilliating normal kids when they make a mistake. I compared it to deaf because jwb brought up the blind comparison and those are conditions that were inflicted on you and you have no agency over them and when society has coined them as insults thats bound to hurt some ppl suffering from that condition and if enough ppl like that are flat out telling you those words hurt them, why keep on saying them?

To sum it up, i would prefer sacrificing some words for the sake of reforming our language for future generations. Because as our tolerance and our understanding evolves so should our language.

I prefer ignorant motherfucker to either of those terms but i guess that might offend the incest people.

Im with OH though. Im not offended by any of the formerly mentioned words but i really sont see the value in verbally attacking people. Its def not worth fighting for.
